His Side SettledJoshua 1:5

He Said It In Words, Not A Handshake

This message is for to hear what God actually committed to in words, because a handshake has always been enough for him with men and he has never asked what was said out loud with God

Dale Marchbanks had bought and sold cattle at the Tuesday sale for thirty one years on nothing but a nod.

He would catch a man's eye across the ring, lift his chin a quarter inch, and forty head changed hands. No paper. Nobody ever asked him for any. His word had been iron since he was nineteen, and out on that ground a man's word is the whole of his name.

On a bright Tuesday in June his grandson Wes rode along. The pens were full and the auctioneer was rolling, and afterward the two of them stood out by the truck in the sun, laughing, because Ivy Fenner had tried the same tired joke about Dale's hat for the eleventh June running.

Then Wes said, "Grandad, how do you know a deal is real if nobody ever writes it down?"

Dale said, "Because I heard him say it. Out loud. In front of people."

They drove home and it stayed with him, all the way past the grain elevator and up the lane.

Because Dale was a churchgoing man of fifty years, and if you had asked him what God was like he would have told you without hesitating. Good. Faithful. Never let him down yet. He could have talked about God's character for an hour and not repeated himself once.

But if you had asked him to quote one sentence God said out loud, in front of witnesses, with His own name attached to it, Dale would have taken his hat off and turned it over in his hands.

He had built a whole life on the principle that a good man's word is enough. And then he had paid God the compliment of treating Him like a good man, and never once gone looking for what was actually said.

That is a compliment. It is also the reason there is nothing in your hand at four in the morning.

You know this, because you are made the same way.

You are dependable. People take you at your word because you have never given them cause not to, and you have extended God exactly the same courtesy: you do not ask Him for the paper, because asking would feel like doubt, and you were raised better than that.

So you carry a general sense that He is good. It is true. It is warm. And a general sense has no verb in it and nothing you can quote back, which is why it will not hold your weight in the dark.

Come on inside and sit down. He said things out loud. In words. In front of witnesses, and He had them written down. Somebody is going to read three of them to you.

He Said It In Words, Not A Handshake

He never left it to a nod

God has never operated on a nod. Every single time He binds Himself, He does it in words, out loud, and then He has those words written down, so that a man standing in a kitchen three thousand years later can read the same sentence Joshua heard in a tent.

Here is one of them. He is talking to a man taking over from Moses with an unmapped country in front of him.

There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.Joshua 1:5

Notice what is not in there. No probably. No we will see. No as long as you hold up your end. He does not describe His character; He states His own conduct in the first person, with verbs. I will not fail thee. I will not forsake thee. That is not a mood. That is a sentence a man can carry in his shirt pocket.

So take the sentence and not the warm feeling around it. You have a promise with verbs in it rather than an impression: Joshua 1:5 has God saying He does not fail and does not forsake, and the Spirit who moved that line onto the page is the One holding it steady under you at this hour.

Joshua did not have to work up a feeling about it. He had to hear it. There is a great deal of difference between the two, and the difference is exactly the difference between a nod and a sentence.

Three sentences with His name on them

Take these slowly. Do not skim them the way a man skims a page he thinks he already agrees with.

I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5

This is yours in particular and not merely true in general. Hebrews 13:5 lifts that line clean out of Joshua's tent and sets it down in front of whoever is reading it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries a written sentence across three thousand years and does not lose a word of it on the way.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10

You were never asked to manufacture a feeling about God's character. You were asked to hear what He said, and Isaiah 41:10 is what He said, and the Spirit is what makes a written line land on a man as address rather than as information.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.Hebrews 8:12

That last one is the hardest for a careful man to take, because a careful man keeps his own record even when nobody asks him to. But read it again. It is not God being generous in a good week. It is a clause, in His own words, with a verb in it.

Which half is settled, and which half is yours

Say it flat out, because a man cannot stand on something nobody will state plainly. His half is settled, and it is settled in words: He said it, He had it written down, and He does not go back and renegotiate a sentence He has already spoken out loud. Your half is not settled, and it was never meant to be. Your half is response, and it is asked of you in the plainest language in the book.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.Joshua 1:9

Look at the order in that verse. The courage is commanded, and then the reason is printed right there at the end of the sentence: for the LORD thy God is with thee. He does not ask a man to manufacture courage out of nothing and then pay him for it. He says the thing first, and then He asks the man to stand on what was said.

And what is asked is real. Do not let anybody talk you out of that. He commanded courage, and a command is a term, and it has your name on it. It is simply not the term the whole agreement hangs from, and knowing which is which is the whole difference between a man who walks and a man who limps.

So hear it: you have His half in writing and it does not move with the weather. Hebrews 8:12 is not a mood God happens to be in tonight; it is a clause He put His own name against, and the Holy Spirit is pressing that clause right now against the part of you that has been waiting for the mood to change.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a call to do anything. It is a reading of what already stands.

So let me read you your standing. You are a man with three sentences he can quote, and that is not the same man who sat down this evening, and nothing about your performance changed in the last ten minutes. What is written does not shift when you do, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting on you to feel it before He hands it across the table.

Dale was not a bad man for never asking. He was a good man who assumed a compliment was the same as a reading. Those are not the same thing, and only one of them can be quoted back at four in the morning.

And the habit of not asking has no right to stay in a house where the sentences have been read out loud. It never came from Scripture and it never came from the Spirit; it came from good manners, and good manners have no authority over a promise. What He said is still said.

Declare this over yourself

This right was given to you in Christ rather than worked up at a sale ring, and Joshua 1:5 is the paper it rests on, with the Holy Spirit witnessing it inside your own chest. Say these out loud, and then leave the outcome with Him: what He does about your herd, your house and your people is His to decide, and what He has already said about Himself is already said.

  1. Nod across the ring, you settled cattle for thirty one years and you never once settled a soul; step back. I have taken good men at their word my whole life and I have carried God on a compliment. The Word of God says He does not fail and does not forsake, so tonight I hold a sentence and not an impression, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of the empty page, you have no claim on a man whose name is written in heaven. I never asked what God said out loud because some part of me was braced to find nothing there, and that page is covered edge to edge in His own handwriting. The Spirit reads it to me, and I am listening.
  3. Jesus, You said it in words and You said it out loud, and Your Father had it written down where a man could find it. I have lived fifty years on a nod and tonight I take Your sentence instead, in Your name. Your word is the paper in my hand, and I am holding it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
