Confessing It Again Hoping It Takes

This message is for to stop confessing the same thing over and over hoping that this time it registers, and to hear what the terms say happened the first time

The intercessors take the rail at seven on a Tuesday, and she is always there before them.

That is deliberate. If she gets there at twenty to, she can be up and back in her seat by five to, and nobody has to ask her anything.

She has a wording. It has been refined the way anything gets refined when a person says it a great many times: the clumsy parts have come out of it, the order is better than it was, there is a phrase near the end she is fairly sure is the right phrase. Three years of the same sentences, in the same order, at the same rail, in the same low voice.

She is not confessing something new. That is the part people get wrong when they picture a woman like this. It is the same thing every week. One thing. The same one.

And I am not going to tell you what it is. It is hers, and she has said it enough times already, and this page is not going to make her say it again.

What I will tell you is what she is actually doing, because she could not have told you herself until quite recently.

She is not repenting. She did that. She is checking.

She has a quiet suspicion that the first time she said it, she said it badly. Too fast. In the car. Without the right feeling in her chest, which she has decided somewhere along the way must be part of the requirement, though nobody ever told her that and she has never read it anywhere.

So every Tuesday she says it again, better, hoping that this is the version that takes.

This particular morning the light comes in low along the front and lands on the rail and the carpet in one long warm band. She is three words in.

Then two hands come over both of hers. The oldest woman in that building, who has been holding that rail since the wiring was done, and who has never once in twenty years asked anybody what they were praying about.

She draws her up onto her feet before she can finish. She is laughing, which is the strangest part.

"Baby," she says. "He heard you the first time. You have been down here for three years asking a Man who already said yes."

And she stands up there furious. Truly furious, and weeping, both at once, and the two are not fighting each other.

Because three years is a long time to keep asking a question that was answered the first morning she asked it.

You have a wording too.

Maybe not at a rail. Maybe it is in the car, or at the sink, or at ten past eleven at night with the lamp still on. But you know the sentences. You have improved them. And you are not asking anymore, not really.

You are checking.

Confessing It Again Hoping It Takes

Read the clause slowly, because both halves of it are load bearing

Here is the sentence the whole thing turns on, and I want you to look at it as a clause in a document rather than as a comfort on a card.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9

Do not skip the word if. It is a real word and it is doing real work. Something is asked, and the thing asked is confession, and I am not about to tell you it is optional, because that is not what the document says and this site does not deal in soft versions.

But now look at the other half, because that is the half she has never once read properly.

He is faithful and just. Not He may. Not He might consider. Not He is inclined to, on a good day, if the wording holds up. Faithful means He keeps what He has said. Just means it would be flatly unjust to hold a thing against a woman that has already been dealt with.

You are dealing with a God who is under His own oath and cannot do otherwise. That is not me being generous on His behalf; the two words faithful and just are right there in 1 John 1:9, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a legal word like faithful and makes it land in a woman's chest at ten past seven in the morning.

Do you see what that does to the repeating? The reason once is enough was never the quality of the confession. It is the character of the One receiving it. She has spent three years improving her half of something whose whole weight sits on the other half.

The mercy was in the terms before you needed it

Now here is the thing about this covenant that almost nobody is told, and it changes the kind of document you think this one is.

The provision for failure is not an exception granted afterward, at the discretion of an official, once the paperwork is in order. It was written into the terms in advance, before you ever needed it, and it has a Person named in it.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

Read who that is. Not a process. Not a procedure. An Advocate, with a name: Jesus Christ the righteous.

You have an Advocate standing for you at this minute, and He was named in the clause long before you were born. 1 John 2:1 is where He is named, in writing, and His Spirit is not building a case against a woman that her own Advocate has already stood up for.

And here is the sentence this whole site exists to say plainly, and it belongs right here in the teaching and not tucked in at the end as a reassurance. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. God's half is settled: He is faithful, He is just, the Advocate is named and standing, and none of that shifts according to your wording. Your half is a response: to confess, to turn, to come. That response is real, it is genuinely asked of you, and it matters. It is simply not the thing making the mercy work.

You were not put on probation and nobody has been keeping you on one. Nothing in what is written sets a term of good behavior before mercy takes effect, and the Holy Spirit is at this moment lifting a sentence out of a document and setting it down where three years of checking used to sit.

The breakthrough

So stand up off that rail a minute, because there is nothing down there to find.

This is yours already: forgiven, and cleansed from all unrighteousness, in the plain words of the clause and not in a hopeful reading of it. 1 John 1:9 says it happened when you confessed, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better version of the sentence before He agrees with what is written.

Confess tomorrow if there is something to confess. Truly. The confessing is not what is leaving today.

What is leaving today is the checking. His half is settled and it was settled by His own faithfulness. Your half is to say it, once, honestly, and to turn, and that half is real and it is asked and it changes how you live. It was simply never the part carrying the weight. Both stand together, and neither one weakens the other.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, kneeling or standing, whichever you are. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it was given to you, not granted on the strength of how well you confessed. Scripture is the ground under every line here and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes them live. Speak first to the three years and the wording you keep refining, then to the fear that yours is the exception, then turn and speak to Him, and whatever He does next in you stays His to decide, in His own way.

  1. Three years of the same wording, you are not an appeal and you never were. Scripture says He is faithful and just to forgive, and faithful means it was finished the first morning I said it, badly, in the wrong words, at ten past seven.
  2. Fear that mine is the exception, you have no clause in this document. What is written in 1 John 2:1 is that we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and the Holy Spirit is not building a case against a woman her own Advocate is standing for.
  3. Lord, You heard it the first time and You settled it the first time, and I have been asking a Man who already said yes. In the name of Jesus I stop rewording it and I take what the terms provided for me before I ever needed them. My Advocate was on His feet before I got to that rail.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
