There is a morning in March that Gene Praether has not told anybody about, and it is coming up on a year.
It was maybe six degrees above freezing and barely light. He came over the rise on the Cutter Road and there was Delbert Marsh's truck sideways in the ditch with the hazards going, and Delbert standing beside it in a jacket that was not enough jacket for that hour.
Gene slowed down. He genuinely did. And then he thought about the eleven o'clock in town he was already going to be late for, and he thought about a thing Delbert had said about him at a township meeting four years back that he had never quite put down, and he came off the brake and drove on.
Nothing came of it. Somebody else stopped inside of twenty minutes. Delbert never knew whose truck that was in the half dark, and if you asked him today he would tell you he has no complaint against Gene Praether in this world.
But Gene knows.
And here is what Gene has done about it since. He has hung gates. He has been, since the middle of March, the busiest and most useful man in three townships. He rewired the Vances' pump house on a Sunday. He hauled hay for a widow two counties over. He has not sat down on a Saturday since the ground thawed.
Last week he and Bern Aldrich finished the corner cabinet Bern's wife had been after him about for two years. Late afternoon, sun coming right in the shop door, sawdust hanging gold in it, tools going back up on the wall one at a time the way Gene likes them. The two of them were laughing about nothing at all.
And Bern said, easy as anything, "You've hung more gates since March than you did the ten years before it."
Gene laughed too. And he did not say a word.
You have a March.
Maybe not that one. Maybe yours is a sentence you said in a kitchen, or a call you did not return, or twenty minutes you have never told a soul about. It might be a big thing. It might be a small thing that will not stay small.
Nobody knows. That is the part that does the damage. You have been carrying it alone since spring, and you have been working it off in gates and pump houses and favors nobody asked for, and it has not moved an inch, because that is not what it is for and that is not how it comes off.
Come sit in the shop doorway a minute. Somebody is going to read you a clause you have never read.

The provision is inside the document
Here is the thing almost nobody has been told about this covenant. The provision for our failure is not an exception somebody makes afterward, on a good day, if the mood is right. It is written into the terms. It was in the document before you got to March.
Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.Micah 7:18
Read the last four words again. Because he delighteth in mercy. That is not God being talked around. That is God saying what He is like on the inside, and it is the reason the clause exists in the first place.
So take this while the shop door is still open. You are not standing outside a room hoping somebody will let you in. Micah 7:18 says pardoning iniquity is what this God does and delights to do, and the Holy Spirit did not carry that sentence down three thousand years so you could admire it from the road.
Gene was not a monster on the Cutter Road. He was a tired man with an old grudge who came off the brake. And the difference between those two descriptions is not the difference between guilty and innocent, it is just the difference between accurate and lurid, and lurid is the version a man tells himself at two in the morning.
The Advocate is named in the terms
Now the clause that made me put my coffee down the first time I read it properly.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1
Look at how that sentence is built. It does not say do not sin, and then trail off and leave you to guess. It says do not sin, and if any man does, here is the name of the One who stands for him, and the name is Jesus Christ the righteous.
That is a term. It is written down. It is in the document as plainly as anything else in it, and it was in there before March.
So hear it as address and not as theology: you have an Advocate with the Father and He is named, in writing, in 1 John 2:1, and the Spirit is putting that written name against the exact morning you have been carrying by yourself since spring.
And Micah does not stop at pardon.
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.Micah 7:19
Into the depths of the sea is a location. It is not a suspended sentence and it is not a file marked closed pending review. It is a place a thing goes and does not come back from.
Which half is settled, and which half is yours
Say it plainly, because a man carrying something alone cannot afford a fog. His half is settled: He put pardon in the terms, He named the Advocate, and He wrote both of them down long before the morning you keep thinking about. That half was never in question and it does not go up or down with your spring.
Your half is real and it is asked, and it is one sentence long.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9
Confess means say it. That is the whole ask. Say it, once, out loud, to the One who already wrote the provision for it. Notice where the faithfulness sits in that verse: He is faithful and just. The faithfulness is His. Yours is a sentence, not a season.
So put down the gates you have been hanging to make it right. Not because the work was bad, it was good work and the Vances have a pump house. Put them down because they were never what this comes off with, and Scripture never asked for them, and the Holy Spirit has not been standing over you counting them.
Here is the turn, and there is nothing to do in it but hear it.
Let me read your standing rather than argue you into it. You are a person with an Advocate whose name is written down, and that has been true on every one of the mornings you spent working it off. Micah 7:18 and 1 John 2:1 are not encouragement, they are clauses, and the Holy Spirit is pressing both of them against the place under your ribs that has been quiet since spring.
Nobody is going to itemize this with you. There is no list to make, no inventory, no walking back through it to see how bad it really was. That is not repentance, that is rehearsal, and it has never once brought a man any further than the ditch he keeps parking beside.
And the carrying has no right to stay in a man who has read the terms. It was never assigned to you. Scripture put the provision in writing ahead of the failure, and the Spirit has been waiting on one sentence, not on a season of gates.
Declare this over yourself
You are not asking for a hearing here. The place to stand is yours in Christ, given rather than argued for, and Micah 7:18 and 1 John 2:1 are the paper it rests on, with the Holy Spirit witnessing in your own chest. Say these out loud once, and then leave the outcome with Him: what He does about the rest of it is His to decide, and what He wrote into the terms is already written.
- March, you have had every morning since March and you are not getting another one; go on. Eleven months of hanging other men's gates never once did what one written clause already does. The Word of God says He delights in mercy and passes by the transgression of His own, so I set that morning down where the terms already put it, in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict I passed on myself, you have no bench and no authority in this shop; step down. I have been the busiest man in three townships since spring trying to work off one morning on the Cutter Road, and Jesus Christ the righteous is already the Advocate named in writing for it. The Spirit says the file has an Advocate on it, and I quit arguing my own case.
- Father, You wrote the provision in before I ever needed it, the way a man lays a key under the third step and says nothing. I carried one morning alone since spring and You have delighted in mercy through every day of it, so I say it once out loud and I leave it said. Your word is where it goes, and it has gone.
