Earning a Thing Already Given

Ellen went to stay at Winnie's for a week while the floors at her own place were being redone.

There is a chair in Winnie's yard, out under the crabapple, angled so it catches the last of the light. Deep, faded cushion, a wool blanket folded over one arm because the evenings turn. Everybody who has ever been to that house calls it the good chair, and nobody has ever had to be told what it is for.

Ellen would not sit in it.

She carried the hard kitchen chair out instead, the one with the cane seat that leaves a pattern on the backs of your legs, and she set it up on the grass at an angle where she could see the gate.

She was up before Winnie every morning. Dishes done before the kettle was properly going. Porch swept. The leggy flowers along the stone wall tied back with twine she found in a drawer. By Wednesday she had cleaned the inside of the stove, which nobody had asked anybody to do since the Nixon administration.

On the last evening Winnie came out, took the dish towel out of Ellen's hands and set it on the rail. Then she put both hands on Ellen's shoulders and walked her across the grass, all the way over, and sat her down in the good chair, and put the tea into her hands, and then sat herself down on the grass beside it like a girl.

Ellen started to get up.

Winnie said, "Sit."

And then Winnie said the thing she had clearly been saving all week.

"Ellie. That chair has been yours since Sunday. It was yours before you got out of the car. Every dish you have washed in my kitchen this week has been you trying to earn a thing I handed you at the door."

Ellen cried a little, which she hated, and then laughed, which was better, and Winnie laughed at her from the grass, and the light came down long and gold across the yard through the crabapple, and neither of them moved for the best part of an hour.

And you have a chair you will not sit in.

Not that one. Yours. The rest you keep postponing. The thing you love and have decided is frivolous. The good hour, the good news, the kindness somebody offered you, the plain enjoyment of being somebody's, all of it filed under later, under after, under when I have made up the ground.

The kitchen chair is not humility

Let me say the gentle thing first, because there is a version of this teaching that lands like a scolding and it should not.

Ellen is not a fraud. She is not performing. Every dish she washed that week came out of real love for Winnie and a real horror of being a burden, and those are not sins, they are the shape of a woman who has been careful her whole life. Nobody is taking that away from her here.

The trouble is what the washing was quietly for.

So here is the ground, and it belongs right here in the middle rather than tacked on at the end. One half of this covenant is what God settled, and that half is finished, and nothing you do this week adds to it or keeps it current. The other half is your response, and it is real, and it is genuinely asked of you, and it is not what secures your place. Both of those sentences are true at once, and this page will not let go of either one.

Right now, as you read, your place is settled and it is not being reviewed. That is not my opinion of how God feels about hard workers. Titus 3:5 says it in the plainest sentence Paul ever wrote about the subject, and the Holy Spirit is what takes a sentence like that off the page and puts it under a woman who is standing up at the sink at six in the morning.

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy.Titus 3:5

Not because of. According to.

Two little prepositions carry that whole verse and it is worth slowing down on them.

Not because of works done by us in righteousness. That closes the door on the entire idea. It does not say our works were small or late or insufficient. It says they were not the reason. They were never on the invoice at all, because there was never an invoice.

According to his own mercy. That is the reason, and notice that it is a reason located entirely inside Him. Nothing about the arrangement is keyed to your output, which means nothing about the arrangement moves when your output moves.

You were saved on a basis that does not fluctuate, and you did not set that basis and cannot unset it. That is not a warm feeling I am handing you. It is written in Titus 3:5 in words chosen to shut off the calculation, and His Spirit is the one who makes a shut door feel like relief instead of like an argument you lost.

Put the word down

Here is the turn, and I want to make it in the open rather than quietly.

We have been using the vocabulary of paying because that is the vocabulary you arrived with. It is a real metaphor and Scripture uses it. But a metaphor that has finished its work has to be set down, or it goes on running in the background making a ledger out of a relationship, and the Holy Spirit never once asked you to keep one.

You were bought with a price.1 Corinthians 6:20

Read who is doing the buying in that sentence. Not you. That verb has already happened, in the past tense, done by somebody else, and the price is not named as a figure because it was not that kind of price. It was a body and a Friday.

So the paying language goes down now, and the responding language stays up. You have a settled place under 1 Corinthians 6:20 and no outstanding amount anywhere in your name, and the Holy Spirit did not bring you this far to install a running total in the back of your head.

I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.Hebrews 10:17

That is not God being nice. That is God binding Himself in the first person to a specific act of forgetting, in writing, with no clause attached about how the week went.

So take it as what it is. You have an act of forgetting on record in your own name, sworn in Hebrews 10:17 by the only party who ever had standing to remember, and the Spirit has never once reopened a drawer God has shut. That is the ground the good chair is standing on.

And the dishes still get done

Now hear the other half, because this is the category where relief goes wrong.

Ellen still washed dishes on the last morning. Of course she did. She swept the porch, she tied the flowers back, and she will do the same thing next time she visits. Nothing about the good chair made the dish towel meaningless.

What changed is what the towel meant. On Monday it was currency. On Saturday it was love. Same hands, same sink, same water, and an entirely different world underneath it.

Something is genuinely asked of you and I am not going to shrink it because the relief feels good. Walk with Him. Keep His word. Serve the people in front of you. Those are terms, they are real, and a person who takes the settled half as permission to stop answering has misread the document as badly as a person who thought she was paying it off.

You have a response to make and it is a real one, according to His word, and His Spirit is the one supplying the willingness underneath it while you do it. The difference between an answer and an installment is not how hard you work. It is what the work is for.
