Terms Laid Open2 Samuel 23:5

Looking for the Line That Makes It Mine to Hold

This message is for to stop reading the terms in search of the sentence that quietly makes her responsible for holding the whole arrangement up

Kate went up to the farmhouse in the last week of October to keep it through the winter, because Bernie was going out to her son in Arizona until spring and somebody had to be in the house when the pipes froze.

Bernie left a letter on the kitchen table under the sugar bowl. Four pages, both sides, in that slanted hand older women have. Kate read it standing up with her coat still on.

The woodstove wants riddling out every third day or it sulks. The faucet in the mudroom drips through a hard freeze on purpose, so leave it be. The dog eats at four and will tell you if you forget. The back door swells and you lift it as you pull.

Kate read that letter eleven times in the first week. Not because she could not remember the stove. Because she was looking for the other sentence. The one that would say, and if it goes wrong, it is on you. She knew it was in there. Every arrangement she had ever stood inside had one, and hers was usually the name at the bottom of it.

She slept badly. She got up at two to check the mudroom faucet and stood in the cold listening to it, one drip and then another, doing arithmetic on a house that was not hers.

On the fifth morning Bernie's sister Ruth came over the hill with a jar of something and let herself in the way people do out there, and found Kate at the table at first light with the letter spread across it and the tea gone cold at her elbow.

Ruth sat down and read a page. Then she said, "Read me the first line."

Kate said she had read it.

"Read it to me."

So Kate turned back to page one and read the first line out loud, and it said: I have had the roof done and the furnace serviced, and my brother Dan is a plumber and he lives four miles down the road; his number is by the door and he is expecting you to use it. You are not holding this house up, love. You are living in it.

Kate stopped in the middle of it.

Eleven times through that letter. She had never once read that line. She had gone past it every single time on her way to find the other one, the way your eye goes straight past a person you are not looking for.

Ruth laughed. Not at her. The old dog came and put his whole weight against Kate's leg the way he did with everybody, and the kettle started up again, and the light came in flat and gold across the table, and Kate laughed too, half of it out of her nose, the way a person laughs when she has been carrying something that was never handed to her.

And you have read a letter like that.

Not four pages under a sugar bowl. The terms of the covenant God made with you. You have been through them more than eleven times, and you were not reading them the way a person reads good news. You were scanning for one sentence.

Looking for the Line That Makes It Mine to Hold

The sentence is not in the document

I want to name the weight first, because it is a particular kind of tired and hardly anybody says it out loud.

Reading in search of the trap is not the same thing as unbelief. A woman can love God, serve Him, mean every word she has ever prayed, and still go through His promises the way Kate went through that letter, her eye sliding past the good lines on its way to the one that hands her the beam. From the outside it looks like carefulness. From the inside it is somebody standing in a cold mudroom at two in the morning, listening to a faucet.

So here is the ground, and it goes in early rather than at the close, because a thing said at the close sounds like an apology for everything in front of it. This covenant has two halves. One half is God's own oath, and that half is settled and finished and holds without a single ounce of pressure from your shoulder. The other half is your response, and it is real, and it is genuinely asked of you, and it is not the beam the roof rests on. Everything that follows is those two sentences with the detail put back in.

Right now, as you read, the arrangement you have been quietly bracing is standing on its own, and it was standing before you ever got to it. I am not laying my own kindness over you like a blanket. David said this out loud in 2 Samuel 23:5, on the worst terms a man ever said anything on, and the Holy Spirit is what lifts a word like ordered off an old page and sets it under the exact place your shoulder has been.

Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure.2 Samuel 23:5

Ordered in all things, and secure

Those are among the last recorded words of David, and it matters enormously what he was looking at when he said them. Not a good year. In the same breath he says his house is not what it should be with God. He had buried a child. He had lost a son to rebellion. He knew precisely what he had done and to whom, and he was not a man reporting that things had turned out well.

He is saying something else, and it is the thing this whole page exists to say plainly. The arrangement is not resting on how my house turned out.

Ordered in all things is a builder's phrase and a lawyer's phrase at once. It means arranged, set in place, every part specified in advance so that nothing at all depends on somebody remembering it later. Secure means kept, guarded, watched over. Neither of those is a word a person does to herself.

You have a covenant that was arranged and specified before you arrived, and not one clause of it was left blank for your reliability to fill in later. That is not a warm thought of mine. It is what Scripture puts in a dying man's mouth on the worst terms of his life, and His Spirit is what carries a three thousand year old line across a kitchen table and lays it on the very thing you were bracing at two in the morning.

The line a person keeps going past

Kate's letter opened with what Bernie had already done. The roof. The furnace. A plumber four miles down with his number by the door. Every single thing a person lies awake over had been dealt with before the letter ever got to the part that asked her for anything.

The covenant opens the same way, and it is astonishing how few of us have read the first line.

I will never leave you nor forsake you.Hebrews 13:5

That is not a mood God happens to be in. It is a commitment in His own words, and look at the grammar of it, because the grammar is the point. He is the subject of the sentence. The verb is a refusal. You were held before you ever noticed you were being held, and Hebrews 13:5 is where He put that in writing, with the Spirit standing over the sentence to make it a present fact in your kitchen rather than a nice line in a book.

And your side of it is real

Something is asked of you, and I am not going to shrink it to make this page easier to hold.

Kate still had to riddle the stove out. The dog still ate at four. The back door still swelled and still had to be lifted as she pulled it, and there was nobody else in that house to lift it. Those are terms. Real ones. Bernie would have been rightly hurt if Kate had let the dog go hungry on the grounds that the roof was somebody else's problem.

What they are not is the roof.

Here is the difference, and it is the whole difference. You have a response to make and it is not an installment on anything. Nothing you do this week buys back, renews or protects what Christ already settled, and I am not softening the ask by saying so. God is on record in Isaiah 46:4 committing Himself to carry what He made, all the way to gray hairs, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked you to hold up the One doing the carrying.

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.Philippians 2:12 and 13

Both halves in one breath, and the order inside it is the mercy. Work it out, and He is the one working in you. You have His own energy inside your obedience according to Philippians 2:13, so even the part of this that is genuinely yours is being supplied by His Spirit while you do it, and that is the entire distance between a covenant and a bill.

And I am not going to set your side out for you in numbered points. The moment terms become a scorecard they have stopped being a covenant, and you have had quite enough scorecards from people who meant well.

The breakthrough

Nothing is going to be produced against you later. That is not a feeling, it is what an oath is for, and a covenant ordered in all things has no loose line left in it to produce.

The way a true thing becomes a held thing is unglamorous and it has not changed in three thousand years. You take your hand off the beam, and you do it out loud, with your mouth, because a woman who has said a thing has stopped arguing with herself about it. Kate did not stop bracing when Ruth explained the letter to her. She stopped when she read the first line out loud, in her own voice, at her own table.

So read it out loud. You have a first line, it was written long before you got here, and it says the house is not yours to hold up. Say it in your own voice and let the Holy Spirit do with it what He does, which is take a written sentence and turn it into the floor under a person's feet.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are, sitting or standing, in your own voice. The right to read your own covenant out loud is yours in Christ and it was not issued this morning on the strength of how the week went. Scripture is the ground under every line of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines live rather than merely file. What He does next with the house you have been bracing is His to decide, and He answers as He sees fit, in His own way.

  1. Sentence I have been hunting for, you are not in this document and you never were. 2 Samuel 23:5 says this covenant is ordered in all things and secure, and nobody orders a thing in all things and then leaves one line loose for me to trip over. In the name of Jesus I am reading the first line out loud instead.
  2. Suspicion that it holds because I check it, you have no clause here. Hebrews 13:5 has God refusing, in His own writing, to leave me or forsake me, and His Spirit did not put that sentence in my hands so I could stand in a cold room at two in the morning listening for a drip. I am going back to bed.
  3. Father, You had the roof done and the furnace serviced before I ever turned a key in that door. You are the God who orders a thing in all things and then guards what He ordered, and Your Spirit is holding the line I was never able to hold. I am taking my hand off the beam and living in the house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
