One Clause Taken Hold Of Today

The prayer chain in that church runs through one phone, and it has run through the same phone for thirty years.

She teaches the young women on a Wednesday. She has taught the young women on a Wednesday since some of the young women's mothers were the young women. Ask her what belongs to a believer and she will not stumble anywhere: she will give you the whole thing, in order, with the references, and she will do it warmly and without one drop of showing off, because she genuinely loves it and she has genuinely never got over it.

And in thirty years she has not once asked for a single item of it for herself.

Not out of humility. That is what everybody assumes and it is not right. It simply never came up. The list was for the people she was praying for. She was the one holding the phone.

This particular Sunday is a bright one, and the room is loud, because a young woman at the front has just told everybody what happened, and half the building already knows because they were praying about it, and the other half is finding out now and hollering anyway.

She is at the back clapping with everybody else, holding her purse in front of her the way she does.

Then the pastor says: now hold on. Sit down a second, everybody. And he calls her name.

And the whole room turns around.

She comes up the aisle laughing, because what else do you do, and gets to the front, and it is completely different up there. From the front you can see everybody's face at once. Somebody puts a hand on her shoulder. Somebody else puts a hand on the other one.

And a woman she has known since they were both girls says, quietly, in front of nine hundred people: "Name one. Just one. Out loud."

And it goes very quiet.

And she stands up there for a long time. Long enough that people start looking at each other. Because she knows the whole list. She could recite it right now. She has taught it on a Wednesday for twelve years.

And she cannot pick one up.

Then she does. She says one thing out loud, four words of it, in a voice that does not sound like hers.

And that room comes apart.

You could recite it too, could you not. Peace. Access. Adopted. No condemnation. An heir.

You have taught somebody else at least one of those. You have prayed at least one of them over a person you love, and meant every word, and gone home.

And you have been standing on the road looking at the house for years, admiring the roofline, telling people how beautiful it is.

Knowing the whole list is not holding one item

Let me say the hard thing first, gently, because it is the thing nobody has said to her in thirty years.

Being able to name every good thing God has given His people is not the same as having taken hold of one of them. It looks the same from the outside. It sounds better than most people's faith. It is not the same.

The difference is not information. She has all the information. The difference is one specific hand closing around one specific thing.

You are holding a great deal of accurate knowledge and possibly not one thing you have actually claimed. That is not a criticism laid over you; it is exactly why Paul, saying goodbye on a beach for what he thought was the last time, reached for the verb he reached for in Acts 20:32, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves a thing a person knows into a thing a person has.

He did not describe it. He gave it.

And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.Acts 20:32

Read the verbs on the end of that. Build you up. Give you the inheritance.

Not show you the inheritance. Not tell you about the inheritance. Not put you in charge of explaining the inheritance to younger women on a Wednesday. Give.

You have been handed something, and handing is a completed action. Acts 20:32 is where it is written down in that word, and the Holy Spirit is the difference between a woman who can define an inheritance and a woman who is currently in possession of one.

What is actually in it, in His own words

Now let me name some of it, and I am going to name only what Scripture names, because a promise nobody made is not an inheritance, it is a wish with a Bible verse near it.

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.Romans 8:16

Child. Heir. Fellow heir with Christ. That is a status, and it is stated as a present fact.

There is access, too, and it is not a small item:

in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.Ephesians 3:12

Boldness. Access. Confidence. Those three words are the ordinary furniture of the room she has been standing outside of for thirty years while telling other people how nice it is in there.

You were made an heir and you were given access, and neither of those was ever a description of somebody else's life. Romans 8:16 puts the Spirit Himself on the witness stand about it, and His Spirit does not testify about a stranger.

And here is the sentence this whole site exists to say plainly, and it goes here in the teaching rather than at the end where it would sound like a disclaimer. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are different in kind. God's half is settled: the inheritance is assigned, the will is written, the Spirit is named as the guarantee of it, and none of that is waiting on how useful you have been. Your half is a response: to take hold. That response is real, it is genuinely asked of you, and it matters, because a hand that never closes on anything goes home empty. It is simply not what put your name in the document.
