Waiting To Be Told It Counted

This message is for to stop waiting for confirmation that her response registered, and to know that a response given is a response received

Eleven years in the kitchen behind the fellowship hall, and she has a system.

Both urns on at twenty to ten. Foil off the trays at a quarter past twelve, not before, because the rolls go leathery if you let the air at them early. Two of the big pans soaking while the third one is still in use. She could do the whole thing with her eyes shut and some Sundays it feels like she has.

And she does not sit down. Not once, not for a plate, not for a cup. Her mother did not sit down either, in a kitchen four hundred miles from this one, and nobody ever explained the rule to her because nobody had to.

This particular Sunday has been a big one. Two visiting families, a baby dedication, and somebody's cousin who brought a tray of chicken that went in about nine minutes flat. The water in the sink has gone cloudy and gray. Steam is still coming off it. Three of the younger women are drying up and laughing at something that is not funny enough to explain to anybody who missed it.

Then one of them takes the dish towel right out of her hands.

Another one has already pulled a chair out. There is a plate on the counter that somebody covered and kept warm, and she does not know who did that, and she never finds out.

"Sit down, ma'am," the girl says. "Sit down and eat."

And she stands there holding nothing, which is the most uncomfortable thing that has happened to her in a decade. And then the girl says the other thing, and says it easily, the way you say a thing everybody knows.

"It counted. Every week of it. You know that, right?"

And she goes off, all at once, right there by the drainer, in front of three young women she has known since they were in the nursery. Which she has never done in eleven years and could not have told you was coming.

Here is what got her. It was not the kindness. It was finding out, in the second it arrived, that she had been waiting eleven years for someone to say that sentence, and she had never once known she was waiting.

She had been standing at that sink, week after week, faithful and glad and steady, quietly unsure the whole time whether any of it registered anywhere.

And you keep a kitchen like that. Maybe not one with urns in it.

You hand Him your yes in the dark most mornings. You mean it. Then you stand at the sink of your own week, drying the same pan, listening for something to come back and tell you it landed.

What is actually asked, in one sentence

There is a thing asked of you in this covenant, and I am not going to soften it, because a soft version helps nobody and this site does not deal in soft versions.

He was asked once, directly, in front of a crowd, which command outranks all the others. He did not give a category. He gave a sentence.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.Mark 12:30

Look at what that is and what it is not. It is not a schedule. It is not a set of boxes. It is one instruction, and the word all sits in it four times, so nobody can pretend it is small.

You have been handed one thing to do and not a list to get through. Mark 12:30 is the whole of what is asked, in His own voice, on record, and the Holy Spirit is the One who keeps that sentence from hardening into a form you fill in every morning to stay in good standing.

And notice what is absent from it. There is no clock. There is no minimum. There is nowhere in the sentence that says a slow answer is a failed one, and I have watched too many good women read a slow answer that way.

You are asked for something enormous, and you are asked for it fresh, this morning, in whatever shape this morning is. That is not my discount on what is written: the sentence says all four times over, His Spirit does not lighten one syllable of it, and Scripture never once puts a deadline beside it. He only makes it possible in a person who could not have managed it alone.

A response given is a response received

Now here is the thing she was actually missing at that sink, and it is not a small thing.

She thought her yes had to be acknowledged before it existed.

Everywhere else in her life, that is exactly how it works. A response counts when somebody notices it. In a kitchen, in a job, in a family, the giving is only half of it and the other half is somebody turning around. So she carried that arrangement into her prayers without ever once inspecting it, and it made her a woman who answered God every day and stood there afterward with her hands wet, waiting.

But the covenant does not run on acknowledgment. It runs on a Person who is present at the moment of the answering.

I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.Psalm 116:1

You were heard this morning, in the exact words you used, half awake, over a kettle. Psalm 116 is where a man says out loud that God bent down to listen, and the Spirit inside you is not a rumor of God at a distance, He is God in the room while you answer.

So let me say the sentence this whole site is built to say plainly, and it goes here, in the middle of the teaching, and not politely at the end. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are different in kind. God's half is settled: He loved first, He bent down first, He is not waiting to see what your week looked like before He decides whether to be in the room. Your half is the response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it matters more than you think. It is simply not the part holding this thing together.

We love because he first loved us.1 John 4:19

You were loved first and that order has never once reversed itself. I am not making that up over you; it is written in four words in 1 John 4:19, and the Holy Spirit is what turns four written words into something that finally sits down in a person.

The breakthrough

So put the towel down where you sit and stop straining to hear a reply that would only be telling you something that is already the case.

You have answered Him, and the answering was the whole of what was asked of you. That is the plain reading of Mark 12:30, and the Holy Spirit is the One holding your yes right now in a hand that was already open before you thought of raising yours.

His half is settled, and it was settled before you learned to pray. Your half is to love Him with all of it, and to keep answering, and that response is genuinely asked and it genuinely matters, and it is not a payment and it never was. Both of those are true in the same breath and neither one makes the other smaller.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing if you can get up. The right to speak like this belongs to you in Christ and was never earned in anybody's kitchen. Scripture is the ground under every line here and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes them live in a chest. Speak first to the eleven years at the sink, then to the fear that He forgets you by Tuesday, then turn and speak to Him, and however He answers the rest of your week, that part stays entirely His.

  1. Eleven years at that sink, you are not the measure of whether it landed. Scripture says the whole of what is asked is to love Him with all of me, and I did that this morning over a bowl of hot water, and it arrived the second I said it.
  2. Fear that He forgets me by Tuesday, you have no standing in this kitchen. What is written is that we love because He first loved us, and the Holy Spirit is holding my yes in a hand that was open long before I ever raised mine.
  3. Lord, You heard me the first time and You have not left the room since. In the name of Jesus I put the towel down and I sit in the chair somebody kept warm for me, and I stop listening for a reply that would only repeat what You already did. You caught every single thing I ever threw.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
