Verna and Hazel talk over the fence rail most mornings, and neither of them has ever finished a cup of coffee.
That is the standing joke between them. Verna comes out with a cup, sets it on the post, and by the time they are done it has gone stone cold and she pours it in the grass on the way back in. Twenty-some years of that. Hazel says one of these days they will get a thermos.
It was a bright morning and they got laughing about the Pruitt boy and the tractor, laughing the way you only laugh with somebody who has known you thirty years, and then it went quiet in that comfortable way and Hazel said, mostly to the fence post, "Reckon the Lord is slow about some things."
And Verna nearly said it.
She got right to the edge. She had the whole sentence sitting in her mouth, the one she has never said out loud to another living person in twenty-two years of praying about the same thing and watching nothing happen.
I think it is because of me. I think this is what that cost.
There is a thing she did the year she was thirty-one. It does not matter here what it was, and I am not going to make you look at yours either. She dealt with it. She confessed it, she made what right could be made, and she has not gone back to it in over forty years. If you asked her whether God forgives, she would say yes without a blink and she would mean it, and she would be able to tell you where it says so.
But she has a private arrangement in her head anyway. And the arrangement is that the silence over this one prayer is the price of that one thing. Nobody taught her that. She built it herself out of two facts sitting side by side, the way a person does at three in the morning.
So she said, "Reckon so," and picked up the cold cup, and they talked about Hazel's beans.
And I would guess you have a version of this. A long silence and an old failure, sitting on the same shelf in your mind, and a quiet arithmetic between them that you have never once said out loud, because you know how it would sound if somebody heard it.

The sentence that never gets said out loud
Let us take it out and look at it in the daylight, because things built at three in the morning rarely survive being said in a kitchen.
The arrangement in your head has two parts. One is that God is holding something over you. The other is that the holding is showing up as silence. And the whole thing has stayed intact for years for one reason: it has never been said to anybody, so nobody has ever been able to answer it.
I will not tell you why a particular prayer has not been answered. Nobody honest will. God has not explained His timing to me or to anybody else writing on the subject, and a person who claims to know why your specific silence has lasted is selling something.
But I can tell you what is not happening in it, because that part is written down. God is not running a collection against you. That is not a mood I am putting on Him; it is what the terms of this covenant actually say, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written term and gets it past the arithmetic you have been doing at three in the morning.
The mercy is not an appendix, it is in the terms
Here is the thing nobody explained to Verna. The provision for failure is not a concession somebody wrung out of God later. It is written into the covenant itself, in the same document, in the same hand.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16
Read the second word for a minute. Confidence. Not permission, not carefully, not once you have made it right. The covenant tells a person who has failed to come in bold, and it tells them so as an instruction rather than a favor.
You have the right of approach written into your own covenant, and Hebrews 4:16 puts the word confidence on it, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a door you walk through rather than a verse you agree with.
The advocate is named in the document
And the provision has a name attached to it, which is the part that ends the arithmetic:
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1
Look at how that sentence is built. He does not want anybody sinning; he says so first and plainly, because the response matters and this letter is not soft on it. And then, in the same breath, he writes in the provision for the failure anyway. But if anyone does sin. The terms anticipated you. There is no scenario in which your failure was a surprise that had to be handled outside the agreement.
And the provision is a Person. Not a process, not a waiting period, not a stretch of proving yourself. An advocate, named, standing with the Father: Jesus Christ the righteous.
So take Him as yours, because He is. You have an Advocate standing with the Father this morning, named in your own covenant, while you are out at the rail with a cup going cold in your hand. 1 John 2:1 puts Him in the terms by name and does it in the same breath as the failure, and His Spirit brings a named clause up off the page and into the hands of the person it was written for.
Then hear God on His own reason, in the first person, because this is the sentence that took the invoice out of Verna's hands:
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.Isaiah 43:25
For my own sake. Not because you finally got quiet enough about it. Not because forty years went by. The blotting out is something God does for reasons of His own, and Isaiah 43:25 says He does not carry the memory of it afterward, and the Holy Spirit is putting that in front of a woman who has been carrying what God set down.
Which half is settled and which half is yours
Say it plainly, because this is the part that gets fuzzy exactly when a person needs it clear.
The mercy is settled. It is written into the terms, it has an Advocate standing in it, and God gave His own sake as the reason, which means it does not move when you move. That half is His.
Your half is real and it is asked: come. Draw near. Come with confidence and not sideways, and come with your mouth open rather than with a sentence you have swallowed for twenty-two years. Coming is a genuine thing that you do, and it matters, and it is asked of you.
And it is not a payment, and it is not a fresh condition, and there is no probation on the other side of it. Nobody in this covenant has to serve time before being allowed to ask again, and His Spirit is the One who walks a person up to that door and in.
So take the two facts off the same shelf, because they were never in the same sentence except in your own head.
You are inside a covenant that wrote the provision for failure into its own terms, with an Advocate named in it and a God who blots out for reasons of His own, and 1 John 2:1 and Isaiah 43:25 are both written down where anybody can read them, and the Holy Spirit is not going to let this stay a doctrine you agree with while the arithmetic goes on running underneath it.
Go on and pray about the thing you have been praying about. Pray it today, and pray it bold. Not because bold prayer forces God's hand, but because a woman with an Advocate has no business coming to that door sideways.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at your own fence rail if that is where you talk. The standing to speak this way belongs to you in Christ and it was not suspended for forty years; Scripture is what makes every word of it true, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in you this morning. What God does about the thing you have prayed for is His to decide in His own timing, and whatever He does with it, the mercy clause under you does not move.
- Twenty-two years of nothing, you are not a bill for anything I did. Isaiah 43:25 says God blots out transgressions for His own sake and does not carry the memory of them, and a God who does not remember is not holding one over me. In the name of Jesus I am taking these two things off the same shelf.
- Fear that I am the reason nothing moved, you are answered by an Advocate who was written into the terms before I ever failed. 1 John 2:1 names Him as Jesus Christ the righteous standing with the Father, and His Spirit is the one who put that clause in front of me instead of my arithmetic. I am praying bold this morning and I am not apologizing at the end.
- Father of mercies, You told me to come with confidence and You did not add a waiting period to it. Your word puts the word confidence on the door of the throne of grace, and Your Spirit is walking me through it while I still have the cold cup in my hand. I am coming in this morning, and I am coming in bold.
