Mercy Written InIsaiah 43:25

What I Thought I Broke For Them

This message is for to hear that his failure did not damage the covenant his children are standing in, which is the fear he has never said aloud

He has been carrying a sentence around all week.

It is eleven words long. He has said it in the car. He said it once out loud to the bathroom mirror and then felt ridiculous and turned the tap on so nobody would hear. He knows exactly where in the evening he is going to say it: after the food, before the coffee, in the gap that always comes when the youngest one takes the little ones out to the yard.

It is not a confession, exactly. Everybody at that table already knows. It is more that it has never been said, out loud, by him, to them, and a man gets to a certain age and finds that the unsaid things have gotten heavier rather than lighter.

So the evening comes and the table is out and the light is doing that thing it does over the wall, and everybody is there, all four of them grown now with their own noise and their own opinions and one of them married to a man who cannot stop feeding people.

And the gap arrives, right on time.

He puts his hands flat on the table. He says, "I want to say something about the years when I was..."

And his eldest daughter says, "No."

Just that. No. Not sharply. The way you say no to somebody who is reaching to pick up something far too heavy for them.

He starts again. "No, listen, I need to..."

And his son cuts straight across him and asks his brother-in-law a question about a car, loudly, and somebody's fork goes down like a gavel and the aunt says something in the direction of the kitchen and suddenly four people are talking at once about nothing whatsoever.

He tries a third time. He gets four words out. His youngest reaches over without even looking at him and puts more food on his plate that he did not ask for and does not need, and says, "Eat, Papá."

And that is when he goes. Right there at his own table with a fork in his hand and his family shouting cheerfully over the top of him about a transmission.

He laughs, because he is being laughed at, and because he is loved, and because he has been outvoted by people he raised. And his eyes are streaming and everybody is very carefully not noticing, which is its own kind of tenderness.

But here is what none of them knows, and this is the part that matters.

The speech was never really about them forgiving him. They did that years ago, out loud, and he heard it and believed it and it helped.

The thing he has never said, to them or to anybody, the sentence under the sentence, is this: he believes he damaged something for them. Not their feelings. Something structural. He believes that what he did in those years reached past his own life and put a crack in the thing his children are standing on with God, and that they are somehow further back in the line than they should have been, and that it is his fault, and that it cannot be undone because it is already done.

He has never said that out loud in forty years. He would not know how to.

And you have your own version of it, and you have never said it either.

What I Thought I Broke For Them

The fear under the apology

Let us name the fear plainly, once, and then not poke at it again.

It is not the guilt. Guilt you know how to carry: it has a shape and a weight, and by now the muscles it uses are familiar ones. The fear is bigger and quieter than the guilt. It is that God's dealings with your household got worse because of you. That the terms held for the people before you, and after you they hold a little less well, and everyone who comes behind you is walking on something you cracked.

Now hear the One who wrote the terms, in His own voice, because a general sense that God forgives is exactly what you already have and it is exactly what has never reached this.

I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.Isaiah 43:25

You are not the load bearing wall in God's dealings with your family. Look at where the reason clause sits in Isaiah 43:25: for mine own sake. Not for your sake, not because of a good stretch you had afterward, and not on the strength of forty years of trying to make it up. The Holy Spirit put that reason clause in the sentence on purpose, because a blotting keyed to a man's own record is a blotting that comes and goes with the man.

You have a blotting that is fastened to His name and not to your record. That is written down with a chapter and a verse under it, and the Spirit is what carries a sentence like that across a table to a man who has been rehearsing eleven words in a bathroom mirror.

The clause that was already in the document

And now the thing this category exists to show you, and it is the reason this site keeps saying that the terms are real.

The failure is written into the terms. Not as an afterthought. Not as an emergency amendment somebody added later when it turned out people were worse than expected. It is in the document, and it is in there before you got anywhere near it.

And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

Read the shape of that. If any man sin. That is a clause. It is a provision. Somebody drafting these terms looked squarely at the fact that the people inside them would fail, and made arrangements, and named a person to handle it, out loud, by name.

You were anticipated. The provision for what you did was standing in the terms before the years you cannot talk about, and 1 John 2:1 names the advocate rather than leaving the office empty, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to be your own attorney at a table where somebody better already has the brief.

So here is the plain sentence, and it goes here, in the teaching, and not at the end where it would sound like small print.

Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. His half is sworn and settled and it does not run on your record. Your half is your response: to turn to Him, to trust the advocate the document names, to live in your house as a man who is dealt with rather than a man on probation. You are standing on a sworn half, and the crack you have been feeling for is not in the foundation. Scripture says He swore by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by, Hebrews 6:13, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a nice thought.

And your response is real. Turning to Him is real, repentance is real, the sorrow is not fake and it is not wasted. It is simply not a sentence you are serving. There is no probation written into these terms, and mercy is not a new condition to satisfy on top of the old ones. Somebody who tells you mercy has fine print has not read the clause.

The breakthrough

So put the fork down, because this is the turn, and it is not a feeling, it is a clause.

You have an advocate named in the terms and the office has never once stood empty. Jesus Christ the righteous, says 1 John 2:1, with the Father, in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit is what brings that off the page and into a chest that has been braced for forty years.

You did not crack it. It does not run on you. That is not me being kind to you at the end of a hard page, it is what the document says about its own construction, and it says it in God's voice: for mine own sake.

His half is settled and it is fastened to His own name. Your half is to stop being your own advocate at your own table and let the named one speak. Your half is real and it is genuinely yours, and it is not the thing holding your family's ground in place.

So let them shout you down. They have been trying to for years. And this time, when your youngest puts food on your plate you did not ask for, eat it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud at your own table. The right to speak like this belongs to you in Christ, and it was given to you rather than earned back over forty careful years. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a man instead of sitting on a page, and how He works in your children, and when, stays His to decide.

  1. Sentence I have rehearsed all week, you are not needed at this table. God said I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, Isaiah 43:25, and He blotted it for the sake of His own name long before my children learned to shout me down.
  2. Fear that I broke it for my children, you do not hold this house up and neither do I. What is written is that if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, 1 John 2:1, and the Holy Spirit had that clause standing in the terms before I ever came near needing it.
  3. Jesus, You are named in these terms as the advocate with the Father, and You are speaking for me right now. I take that in Your name at my own table, and tonight I put the speech down and eat what my daughter has already put on my plate.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
