Marta has never once sat down in that cafe.
Nine years she has been on the counter, and in nine years nobody has managed to get a cup of tea in front of her while she was still standing still long enough to drink it. She arrives before the first person. She stays past the last. If the floor is clean she cleans it again. When somebody thanks her she says it is nothing, and then finds something else to carry.
The others love her and have quietly worried about her for about seven of those nine years.
What none of them understood until this spring is what Marta thought she was doing. She came to that cafe in a very bad stretch, when there was almost nowhere else to go, and they had put a key in her hand and a job on the board and never asked her a single question about any of it. In her head, ever since, the key has been on loan. The hours are how she keeps it. Stop being indispensable and somebody upstairs runs an eye down the list and quietly takes the name off.
It was Ro who found out, on a Friday, at closing.
Marta had said something light, the way people do when they mean it entirely. Something about how she had better keep her end up or she would be out the door. And Ro, who is not a subtle woman, went and got the staffing folder and turned it around on the counter and put her finger on it.
Not the cover list. The permanent list. Marta's name, in the same handwriting, since the second week of her second month. Nine years ago.
"You were never on trial," Ro said. "You have never been on trial once. You have been covering a shift that came off this schedule before you ever walked in here, and every single one of us thought you just liked the work."
Marta stood there with the cloth still in her hand.
Then the others came round the counter, all four of them, and took the cloth off her, and Kem got her coat, and they steered her out of her own kitchen through the front door into the last of the sun, and she was laughing and could not stop, that helpless kind, standing on the sidewalk in the low gold light at ten past six on a Friday with nothing whatsoever left to do.
And you have a version of this. Maybe not a cafe. But there is something you do, faithfully, gladly even, and underneath it runs a low current of keeping your place. Nobody would call it fear if they saw it. It looks exactly like diligence. It has always looked exactly like diligence.

The shift ended at four
There is a particular exhaustion that comes from working hard at something that was finished before you got there, and it does not feel like exhaustion. It feels like devotion. That is what makes it so hard to see and so hard to say to anybody.
So let us read the clause, because it is short and it is blunt and it has been sitting there the whole time.
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.Colossians 2:14
Canceled. Set aside. Nailed up in public where everybody could see it had been dealt with, which is what you do with a thing you never intend to produce again.
And here is my one promise about vocabulary, made now and kept for the rest of this page: that is the last time we talk in the language of owing. It was the reader's picture, not God's. From here the words are answering, walking, belonging, responding. Nothing you do today is an installment on anything, because there is no running total, and there is no ledger in a back room with your name at the top of it.
You are not covering a shift. Colossians 2:14 says the record was set aside publicly and finally, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a finished legal fact and makes it something a person can actually stand up in.
What He said about it, in His own words
Paul is telling us what happened. Now hear God say it Himself, in the first person, because this is the sentence that goes to the root of the keeping.
I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.Isaiah 43:25
Read the reason He gives. For my own sake. Not because the record had got small enough. Not because somebody had put in enough hours on the counter. He blots it out for His own sake, which means the thing was never resting on your performance in the first place, and that is why your performance cannot now be what maintains it.
That is what settled means. He said it twice at the start of the line, I, I am he, the way a person says something when they are removing all doubt about who is doing it.
You are standing on a sentence God spoke about Himself, not on your last nine years of arriving early, and Isaiah 43:25 is where anybody can go and read it for themselves while the Spirit sets it down in the exact place where the fear of being surplus has been living.
And this is not permission to stop showing up
Now the other half, and this page will not skip it, because relief of this size has a way of turning into a shrug and a shrug helps nobody.
Marta went back on the Monday. Of course she did. She loves that place, she is good at it, and the people in it are hers. What ended on Friday was not her presence. What ended was the reason underneath it.
And that is the whole difference. Something is genuinely asked of you inside this covenant: to walk with Him, to keep His word, to love the people He put in front of you, to answer when He speaks. That is real and it is asked and it is not decorative, and the Spirit who prompts it is the One who carries it through, and I am not going to number it for you, because the second any of this becomes a scorecard it has stopped being a covenant and you have had enough of scorecards.
So here is the sentence this whole site exists to say plainly, and it belongs right here, inside the teaching, and not tacked on at the bottom like a disclaimer. Christ's finished work is the settled half. It holds without you, it is not renewed by you, and it was never at risk. Your response is the other half. It is genuinely asked, it genuinely matters, and it is not the thing holding your place.
You were never the one keeping this. You are the one living in it, and the difference is not a technicality: Isaiah 43:25 puts the whole reason in God's own motive, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from a fact you agree with into a floor you stand on.
Here is the turn, and it is a small physical thing, which is usually how the big ones arrive.
You are not keeping your place. You have a place, and it is held by Someone else entirely, and that is not a compliment I am paying you, it is Colossians 2:14 in the plainest words it owns, and the Holy Spirit is the One who walks a person out from behind their own counter and into the light.
And say it out loud, because a thing held silently stays negotiable, and this one has been negotiating with you for years. Jesus set the required faith at the size of a seed you would barely feel in your palm and then put the whole weight on the mouth: say to this mountain. Not because the words are magic. Because a woman who has said it has stopped arguing with herself about it.
Then go back on Monday. Go back gladly. Go back as staff.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting down, on purpose. Christ is in you, so the right to stand on His finished work belongs to you and was never issued by anybody who could withdraw it. Scripture is the ground under every line here, and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines living rather than merely legal. What He does with your Monday from here is His to decide, and the outcome is His.
- Shift that ended before I arrived, you are not my standing and you never were. Colossians 2:14 says the record was canceled and nailed up in public, and nobody nails a thing up where everyone can see it and then quietly reopens it. In the name of Jesus I am putting down the cloth.
- Dread that I am only wanted while useful, you are answered by God's own motive. He said in Isaiah 43:25 that He blots out transgressions for His own sake, and the Holy Spirit does not keep a person on a list that His own word says was never a list. I am serving from inside now, and gladly.
- Christ, You settled this before I ever came through the door, and You did not leave a balance behind for me to carry. I thank You, because the half that holds my place up was finished at the cross and it has not been reopened since. I am going back Monday as Yours, and I am sitting down first.
