Praying Harder To Top It Up

This message is for to stop praying harder on the weeks she has sinned as if she were topping up a balance that has run low

The prayer room is the second door on the left, past the coats, and somebody unlocks it at half past five whether anybody comes or not.

She comes. Six most mornings, twenty minutes, a cushion she has used so long it has gone flat in the middle. It is a good twenty minutes. She loves it. Some mornings it is the only part of the day that belongs to her.

But there is a second arrangement running underneath the first one, and it has never been said out loud, not to her husband, not to the woman she has known since school, not to God in so many words.

On the mornings after a bad week, she does ninety.

Not because she wants to. Because the number went up. Sharp with her sister on the phone Thursday, and the number goes up. A thought she is ashamed of, on the drive home, and the number goes up. There is a rate for it. She never sat down and set it. It assembled itself, quietly, over about fifteen years, the way a path appears in grass because feet keep going that way.

This particular morning the light is coming in low and gold through the one window that faces the parking lot, and the other women are getting up off the carpet, stretching, laughing about somebody's alarm clock. She is not getting up. She is not nearly done. It was a bad week.

Then a hand lands warm and heavy between her shoulder blades. The woman who unlocks that door at half past five has been unlocking it for twenty years, and she does not say anything for a good while. She just kneels down beside her on the carpet, which at her age is not nothing.

And then she says it.

"Baby. Who are you paying?"

And she opens her mouth to explain, the way you do, and hears the first four words of the explanation come out, and stops.

Because out loud it does not sound like devotion at all. Out loud it sounds like a woman putting something back on a shelf she thinks she took it off.

You have one of these too. Maybe not ninety minutes on a carpet.

Maybe you serve harder in the weeks you feel further away. Maybe you volunteer for the thing nobody wants when you have been short with the people at home. Maybe you just cannot make yourself sing on the front row on a Sunday that follows a Wednesday you would rather not discuss.

Whatever the shape of it, you know the rate. And you have never once said it out loud either.

Praying Harder To Top It Up

Once is a word with edges on it

Here is where the whole thing turns, and it turns on a single word that a letter in your Bible uses like a hammer.

The men who ran the old system worked to a schedule. They had to. The sacrifice had a shelf life, so the work came around again every morning, forever, and everybody understood the arrangement.

He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.Hebrews 7:27

Read the word daily and then read the word once. Those are two different worlds, and your ninety minutes lives in the first one.

You are kneeling in front of a Priest who has already finished and sat down. That is not a kind gloss laid over a hard verse; Hebrews 7:27 says once for all in His own book, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written word like once and makes it land in a woman who has been quietly running a schedule for fifteen years.

And the letter will not leave it alone. It says it again, and it adds the detail that settles the argument:

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.Hebrews 10:12

He sat down. Nobody in the old system ever sat down. There was no chair in that place, because the work was never finished, and a chair in a room like that would have been an insult.

You have never once been on a schedule with God, whatever your mornings have looked like since you were nineteen. I am not going soft on you here: that is the plain sense of what is written in Hebrews 10:12, and His Spirit is the difference between reading that a Man sat down and actually letting your own shoulders come down.

Now the part where I do not let you off anything

Here is where this can go wrong, so let me be plain, because I love you too much to hand you half a truth.

Nothing I have said deletes what is asked of you. Repentance is real and it is asked. Confession is real and it is asked. Turning around and going the other way is real, and it is asked, and it is not optional, and a woman who hears once for all and concludes that her Thursday does not matter has heard the opposite of this letter.

What is deleted is the arithmetic. Not the practice. The arithmetic.

So here is the sentence this site exists to say plainly, and it belongs here in the middle where you cannot mistake it for a comfort tacked on at the end. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. God's half is settled: one offering, made once, by a Priest who then sat down, and there is nothing in your hands that adds to it or takes from it. Your half is a response: turning, confessing, coming, loving Him back. That response is real, it is genuinely asked, and it matters enormously. It is simply not what is holding your place.

You were bought outright, and you were bought once, and there is no second column anywhere in the document. Scripture puts it in one line in Hebrews 10:14: by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being made holy, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes that written sentence and pries a woman's fingers off a rate she never chose.

So pray your ninety minutes. Truly. Pray two hours if two hours is what your heart wants on a morning like that.

This is yours now: the praying, kept, and the paying, retired. Nobody has to make that true, because it was promised and it was written down, and the Spirit is not asking you to feel it before He starts working it into you.

The breakthrough

So get up off the carpet a minute. Not because the praying was wrong. Because the reason underneath it has been wrong for fifteen years and today is the day it goes.

You are welcome in that room on your worst Tuesday exactly as much as your best one, and the reason has nothing at all to do with the length of your prayers. That is what is written in Hebrews 7:27, once for all, in His own words, and the Holy Spirit is at this moment taking a schedule out of a woman's hands and putting a Father in front of her instead.

His half is finished. Your half is to come, and to turn, and to answer Him, and that half is real and it is asked and it changes how you live. It just never was the thing keeping the door open. Both of those stand together, and neither one weakens the other.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your feet if you can manage to get up. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it was handed to you, never earned on anybody's carpet. Scripture holds every line here up and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes them live. Speak first to the extra ninety minutes, then to the fear that He likes you better in a good week, then turn and speak to Him, and whatever He does with tomorrow is His to decide, in His timing, and not one bit of it changes what He already finished.

  1. Ninety minutes on a bad Tuesday, you are not the reason I am welcome in this room. Scripture says He offered Himself once for all and then sat down, and a seated Priest is not standing over me waiting for my knees to catch up.
  2. Fear that He likes me better in a good week, you do not run this house. What is written is that by one offering He has perfected forever the ones being made holy, and the Holy Spirit does not ration Himself out to me according to my Wednesday.
  3. Lord, You did it once and You sat down, and I have been kneeling as though You were still standing. In the name of Jesus I stop topping up what You finished and I come to You tomorrow as a daughter. My knees are Yours from here on for talking, not for paying.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
