Dusk in the yard, and the whole crew still up on their toes about it.
Good night. Hiker off the east face, found before dark, walking wounded, out under his own power with two of them holding an elbow each. The truck was backed in with the doors open and the light spilling out yellow across the gravel. Somebody had gone for burgers. Somebody else was telling the story again, louder, with hand movements, to people who had been standing right there when it happened.
And over at the fence line, in the half dark, Hollis Peake was coiling rope.
He always is. Eleven years on that team and Hollis has never once whooped. He does not high five. When the radio goes quiet and the job is finished, he walks to the truck and starts putting the gear right, and by the time the noise dies down every harness is hung, every line is coiled the same handed way, and the kit bags are stacked so the next crew can find things in the dark.
Wren Doughty, who has run that base for nine years, came over with a paper cup in each hand and stood there a minute watching him work.
"Hollis."
"Wren."
"Eleven years. I have never heard you cheer. Not once."
Hollis pulled the last loop through and did not look up. "I am glad," he said. "It just does not come out."
"I know it," Wren said, and handed him the cup. "That is why the ropes are always right."
And then she went back into the noise and left him there in the quiet with his coffee, and he stood a while with the smell of wet nylon and pine on his hands, and he was, in fact, glad, the way a stone is warm at ten at night from a sun that went down at seven.
Now here is the part that is yours.
Somewhere behind you is a room where somebody stood up and said that God is not interested in obedience you do not feel. That He wants a cheerful giver of everything, that duty is the enemy, that if the joy is not on your face when you do it then the doing is worth nothing to Him.
And you went home and did the thing anyway, flatly, the way you do it every week. And you have never once been sure it counted.

Where Scripture actually puts the delight
Let me name the wound before I lift anything, because it is a specific one.
Being told that flat obedience is worthless does not make a person joyful. It makes them watch themselves. From then on, the obedience is not the only thing happening: there is also a small anxious clerk standing off to one side, checking whether enough feeling was present for the act to be valid. That clerk was never in the terms. Somebody hired him on your behalf.
So let us go and find where the word delight actually appears, and read it where it sits rather than where the sermon put it.
For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being.Romans 7:22
Notice who is talking and when. That sentence is in the middle of the most honest chapter Paul ever wrote about not managing it: he is describing doing the thing he hates and failing to do the thing he wants. He is not on a mountaintop. He is not glowing. And right there, in the middle of it, he reports delight, and he tells you exactly where it is located.
In the inner being. Not on the face. Not in the week. Not in the temperature of the hands.
So you have a delight that is not the same thing as a mood, and I am not softening the word to get you off the hook. Romans 7:22 puts it in a man's inner being while the rest of him is having a hard time, and the Holy Spirit is the One who planted it down there in the first place, well below where your feelings do their weather.
Which half is settled, and which half is yours
Here is the sentence this whole thing stands on, and it belongs in the middle of the teaching rather than tucked at the bottom like a disclaimer.
The half that holds this up is what God has already done inside you, and that half is settled. The half that is yours is your response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it is not the half carrying the weight. Both are true at once, and neither one lets the other off.
Now hear what God bound Himself to, in His own words, because this is the specific commitment that makes the flat obedience make sense:
And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.Ezekiel 36:27
Read the verbs and read who is doing them. I will put. I will cause. Both of them His, both of them already spoken, neither one waiting on your enthusiasm to be activated.
You are walking in something He put in you and not in something you generated on a good morning, and that is not my flattery, it is Ezekiel 36:27 with God as the subject of both verbs, and His Spirit is the One who does the causing that the verse promises.
And I am not going to use that to let the response go. Walking is still yours to do. The feet are yours. He does not walk them for you and a man who never walks is not being quietly carried by a promise he is ignoring. What is asked is asked. It is simply not asked at a required temperature.
He knows what we are made of
There is a line about God's own realism regarding people, and it deserves to be read out loud.
For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.Psalm 103:14
That is not an insult. That is a builder who knows the material. He is not standing over your Tuesday evening astonished that you are tired, or scandalized that the gladness did not reach your face this time.
You were never being graded on how much you felt while you did it, and I am not putting that over you as an opinion; it is written into Psalm 103:14 as a description of what God actively remembers about people, and the Spirit is the One who makes a sentence like that land in a man who has been auditing himself for years.
And now the honest word about delight, since the category is called what it is. Delight is where obedience is going. It is the direction of a life with God in it, and it does arrive, in its own way and at His speed. It is not the toll you pay at the gate on the way in. A man coiling rope in the dark with nothing showing on his face is not standing outside the covenant hoping to feel something enough to be let in. He is inside it, working.
This is where it stops being a worry about your temperament and becomes where you stand.
You have a delight sitting in your inner being that your face does not have to confirm, and I am not making that up to comfort you. It is where Romans 7:22 puts it, and the Holy Spirit is pressing it now into the exact place the anxious clerk has been standing.
So do the thing tonight. Flatly, if flatly is what you have. Do it as somebody who belongs here rather than as somebody auditioning to stay, because belonging is the settled half and it was settled without reference to your enthusiasm.
The ropes are always right. That was never nothing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, however they come out, and it does not matter tonight whether they come out warm. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than felt into existence. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit is what makes these words living rather than merely accurate. What He grows out of your obedience, and when, is His to decide, and the outcome is His.
- Sentence that said flat does not count, you are not in the terms anywhere. Romans 7:22 locates delight in the inner being of a man who is having a hard week, and a thing that far down does not need my face to vouch for it. In the name of Jesus I am doing tonight's small work as a man who belongs here.
- Whisper that there is something cold in me, you have no evidence and you never did. God said in Ezekiel 36:27 that He puts His Spirit inside a person and causes the walking, and eleven years of quiet obedience is what caused walking looks like from outside. I am glad underneath, and underneath is where He put it.
- Jesus, You know my frame and You have never once been surprised by how little reaches my face. Your word in Psalm 103:14 says You remember that we are dust, and Your Spirit is making that remembering steady in me while I work. I am serving You tonight in Your name, and I am not waiting to feel it first.
