His Side SettledEzekiel 36:26

It Was Never Only Poetry

This message is for to hear the commitments she has always read as beautiful language read to her instead as a sworn oath with weight

Every wedding in that church for nineteen years, and every funeral, and she is the one they ask to read.

She has a voice for it. Everybody says so. She stands up in a room that has just gone quiet and the words come out of her slow and warm and shaped, and by the second line the grandmothers have their hands in the air and somebody in the back row is folding a tissue into quarters. It is a gift, and she knows it is a gift, and she has never once been proud of it, which is its own kind of gift.

This particular Sunday is bright. It is the kind of morning where the light comes through the high windows in long dusty bars and lands on the third row whether the third row asked for it or not. The choir has just come down off the last note and they are laughing at each other in the aisle the way people laugh when a thing has gone well and nobody has to hold their face still anymore.

A woman she has known for thirty years catches her at the end of the pew, hugs her hard, the way that generation hugs, then holds her out by both shoulders and says it.

"Baby. You read that like it was a poem."

She laughs, because it lands like a compliment. Then she sees that it was not one.

"It was no poem," the old woman says. "That was Somebody swearing something. Out loud. In front of witnesses. With His own name on the bottom of it."

And she goes home and the roast goes in and the potatoes go on and she cannot get it out of her.

Because she knows that passage. She has read it in that building eleven times. She knows the rhythm of it, where the breath goes, which line to slow down on so the room leans forward. And she has never, not once in nineteen years, heard it as an undertaking made to her by a Person who does not go back on things.

She has heard it as language. Beautiful language. The kind of sentence somebody paints in gold on a nursery wall. The kind you put on a card for a friend in the hospital.

Nobody ever read it to her as an oath.

And you just did the same thing she did, with the verse you love the most, in the time it took to read that paragraph. You know exactly how it sounds. You know which part of it lifts. You could say it in your sleep, and you have.

You simply never once heard it as something a Person swore, out loud, with His name at the bottom, about you.

It Was Never Only Poetry

A poem asks nothing of the one who wrote it

That is the whole difference, and once a person sees it they cannot unsee it.

A poem is a gift of language, and it costs the writer nothing after the writing. Somebody can love a poem for forty years and the poet owes them not one thing, because a poem was never an undertaking. It was a beautiful arrangement of something true.

An oath is a different object altogether. An oath binds the one who speaks it. It names a party. It names what that party undertakes. It puts the speaker's own name at the bottom where the whole room can see it. So the old woman's correction in the aisle was not a small correction. She changed the genre of every underlined verse in that house.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numbers 23:19

Now hear this where you sit, because it is the reason that verse sits in the Bible at all. You are being spoken to by Someone who is unable to take it back. That is no flourish of mine laid over you. It is the plain sense of what is written there, and the Holy Spirit is at this moment lifting that sentence off the page and standing it up in the room with you.

He put the whole thing in the first person

Now the sentence itself. It was spoken to people who had made a catastrophe of their national life and knew it, and notice that it is not addressed to their behavior at all. It is addressed to their equipment.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26

Read the verbs and count the parties. Give. Put. Remove. Give. Four undertakings, one party undertaking them, and nowhere in the sentence a clause about the other party's performance.

You have a Person's word about the inside of you, and not a warm idea about the inside of you. Ezekiel 36:26 is where it stands on record in His own mouth, and the Spirit is what makes a written sentence weigh something in a chest instead of lying flat on a page.

And there is a fifth verb in the very next line, which settles who is doing the work:

And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.Ezekiel 36:27

Here is the sentence this whole site exists to say out loud, and it belongs right here in the middle of the teaching rather than tucked at the end as a comfort. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are not the same kind of thing. God's half is an oath: sworn, first person, on record, and it is not waiting to see how your month went. Your half is a response: to receive it, to say yes to it, to live inside it. That response is real, it is genuinely asked of you, and it matters very much. It is simply not the thing holding the covenant up.

So stop lending His sentences out and let one land on you for once. You were named in that oath on purpose and not by accident. I am not handing you an opinion of mine: Scripture said it first, out of His own mouth, and His Spirit is saying it over you now, while you sit there with the same verse you have loved for years.

An oath has edges, and a compliment does not

The reason nobody ever read it to you that way is not that they were careless. It is that it is nearly always handed over as encouragement. Somebody reads it at a bedside, somebody stitches it on a cushion, and every one of them means it kindly, and not one of them ever says the words party, undertaking, or sworn.

You are holding a sworn commitment and you were raised on it as a greeting card. Nobody has to make that true. It was promised, in writing, with a name at the bottom, and the Holy Spirit is only doing what He always does with a promise, which is press it in until it holds.

Feeling moves a person on the days that person is movable. An oath has edges. It can be quoted. It can be read back. It does not evaporate at four in the morning when the feeling has gone to bed and the house is quiet and the thing a woman is afraid of sits up.

You have His own verbs in your hands this morning, and verbs are not decoration. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the whole difference between reading a line and standing on it.

The breakthrough

So sit still a second and stop admiring it.

I will give you a new heart. I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the heart of stone. I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you.

This is yours, and it is yours as an undertaking rather than as an ornament. Hebrews 6:17 records that God, wanting to leave His heirs no room to wonder, guaranteed His purpose with an oath, and the Holy Spirit is the One moving your name into the place where your admiration has been sitting.

His half is sworn. Your half is to answer Him, and answering is real work and real life and real love, and it buys nothing, because the swearing was already done by the only party who could swear it. Those two facts stand side by side and neither one weakens the other.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you sit. The right to speak like this was given to you in Christ, and it is one of the settled things rather than one of the things you are working toward. Scripture is the ground under every line here and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes them live. Speak first to the nineteen years of beautiful reading, then to the fear that you were only ever the voice, and then turn and speak to Him, and whatever He does next in your life stays His to decide, in His timing, which is exactly the part that never once touched His oath.

  1. Nineteen years of reading it beautifully, you are not the last word on that verse. Scripture put an oath in my mouth and I have been performing it, and this morning I receive it: a new heart, a new spirit put within me, and a heart of stone carried out of my chest by the God who is not a man that He should lie.
  2. Fear that I am only the voice up front, you do not get to keep me outside the sentence. God swore this to me and not merely through me, and the Holy Spirit is pressing a written oath into a chest that has spent nineteen years lending it out to other people.
  3. Lord, You said I will four times over one heart and You said it about mine. I take those verbs in the name of Jesus and I stop reading them beautifully and I stand up inside them. Your own mouth swore it, so my admiring days are finished and my standing days start here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
