The Clause I Was Braced For

This message is for to read the covenant the whole way through once without bracing for the clause that will cost her, after years of reading every promise of God the way she reads a contract she once signed unread

The green folder had been on top of the microwave since April.

Nadia had been asked to sing with the choir at the community center in the spring, and the director handed it to her at the door. Music for the season, the rehearsal calendar, and two pages at the front saying what the choir gives and what the choir asks. Take it home, read it, come back Thursday.

She took it home. She did not read it. She set it on the microwave, where it collected a spelling test, a birthday card, and a school photograph of a boy with no front teeth.

She wanted to go. That was the strange part. She had wanted to sing with other people since she was nineteen, and at nineteen she had signed a lease without reading it, and on page four there was a sentence about the hedge along the alley. Two summers of Saturday mornings out there with borrowed clippers, sweating, furious, and entirely in the wrong, because she had signed it.

So she reads things braced now, one eye running ahead of the other, hunting for the line that will cost her later. A document she has not opened is a document that still might.

June came over on a Tuesday morning after the school run. Kettle on. The toddler under the table conducting something with a wooden spoon. June reached up, took the folder off the microwave, blew the crumbs off it, and set it down between the mugs.

"Right," she said. "I am reading you the whole thing. Both pages. Out loud."

What we give you. A part written for your voice, whatever your voice turns out to be. Somebody next to you who already knows the line. Thursday evenings from September, ours, kept. And if you miss a whole season for a baby or an illness, your seat is your seat when you come back.

What we ask of you. Come. Learn your part. Tell us when you cannot come.

Then June turned the second page over and held up the back of it, and the back of it was blank.

Nadia looked at the blank side a long moment. "Is that it?"

"That is it," June said. "That is the whole folder."

And Nadia laughed. Not at anything funny. It was the laugh of a person setting down something heavy they had been holding braced for four months without once putting it on the table.

You know that laugh, or you would like to. Somebody told you once that God's covenant with you has no conditions in it whatsoever, and you nodded, and you could not make that fit a single page you were actually reading. Or somebody left you with the sense that there is a line somewhere with your name on it. Either way you read His promises the way Nadia read that lease at nineteen. Braced. And what you would like, just once, is to read the whole thing out loud with your shoulders down.

The Clause I Was Braced For

Both pages, and only one of them is yours to hold up

Let me name the weight first, because almost nobody says it out loud. Living inside an agreement nobody has read to you is exhausting in a way that looks, from the outside, exactly like diligence. It is not doubting God. A person can love Him and serve Him and sing on a Thursday and still carry a low permanent alertness under all of it, the way you carry a sound you cannot place in a house at night.

So here is the sentence, and it belongs here in the middle rather than at the end where a disclaimer goes. This covenant has two halves. God's oath is one half, and that half is settled: sworn, finished, holding without help from you. Your response is the other half, and it is real, and it is genuinely asked, and it is not the thing keeping the covenant standing. The rest of this is those two sentences with the detail put back in.

Now the first page, in His own words. Read it slowly, rather than skimming a verse that has come round before:

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.Hebrews 8:10

Count the I wills. Four of them in one sentence, and not one if you propping the door open. He does not say I will if they will. He says I will, says it again, and nobody in the sentence is consulted.

You are standing inside a paragraph where God is the only one making commitments. I am not laying my own warmth over you when I say that. Hebrews 8:10 is where it is written down, in a letter, in ink, and the Holy Spirit is taking that written sentence this morning and setting it under you as floor rather than as sentiment.

And notice where He puts it. Not in a drawer. On the inside of a person, in His own hand. A law written on the heart becomes yours the way a tune becomes yours, until you catch yourself humming it in a kitchen and could not say where you learned it.

That order matters more than it looks. You were inside the settled half before anybody read you the asked half, and that is the order Scripture keeps everywhere: the sea opens first, the commandments come at the mountain afterward. His Spirit is what makes that order ground under a person instead of a tidy arrangement of ideas.

What the second page actually says

Now the other page, and this site does not shrink it.

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.Deuteronomy 10:12

Require. That word sits in the text, in God's own mouth, and no amount of kindness on my part gets to sand it off. Something is asked. Anybody who hands you one page and calls it generosity has left you holding half a document, which is precisely what makes a person brace.

But look at the kind of thing it is. Fear Him. Walk in His ways. Love Him. Serve Him. Those are not the condition of having a seat. They are what a seat looks like from the inside, the way Thursday is not how Nadia keeps her place but what a person with a place does.

And I am not going to number them for you. The moment terms become a scorecard they have stopped being terms, and you've had enough of scorecards. A covenant is read. A scorecard is totaled.

You have a place in this that was not handed to you on a Thursday when your voice worked and is not taken back on a Thursday when it does not. That is not my encouragement talking. It is the plain consequence of what Hebrews 8:10 says God does with His law, and the same Spirit who carried the men who wrote that sentence is at work inside you now, making it live rather than merely file.

Which does not make your yes decorative. Hear that the right way round, because the ditch on this side of the road is as deep as the ditch on the other. What you do matters. It is asked, by name, by God, in a verse anybody can look up. It is simply not the thing holding the covenant up, and those two facts have lived together since Sinai. Nadia coming on Thursday does not create her seat, and it is also not nothing. The choir was never the folder. The choir is the singing.

Right now, as you read, you are inside terms you did not draft and cannot break by being ordinary. Deuteronomy 10:12 says what is asked; Hebrews 8:10 says who guaranteed the arrangement. And the Spirit is not behind you with a rehearsal calendar in His hand. He is inside the asking, supplying the very walking that is asked for.

The breakthrough

Nothing here is going to be produced against you later. That is not a mood I am putting you in. It is what an oath is for.

You are not being assessed this morning. You are being read to. What stands in Hebrews 8:10 was written before you were born and settled without your signature, and the Holy Spirit is what turns a sentence that has come round before into a floor you can feel under your feet.

So do what June did, and do it out loud, because a thing read silently stays a thing a person is still privately deciding about. Settled page first. Asked page second. Then the blank back of it, which is the part nobody thinks to show anybody.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting or standing. The right to read your own covenant is yours in Christ and was not issued by anybody who could withdraw it. Scripture is under every line here, the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines living rather than merely legal, and what He does with your Thursday from here is His to decide.

  1. Clause I have been braced for, you were never written into this covenant. Hebrews 8:10 has God saying I will four times and asking nobody's permission for any of them, and a God who swears like that does not bury a page underneath it. In the name of Jesus I am reading this the whole way through with my shoulders down.
  2. Fear that I missed the line, you have no page in this document. Scripture says God writes His law on the inside of a person, in His own hand, so the reading was never left to me on my own. The Holy Spirit is holding this page open, and I am reading it out loud.
  3. Jesus, You are the guarantee of a better covenant and You did not put a trap inside Your own promise. I thank You that the half holding this up was settled before I came near the folder, and the half that is mine You are working in me while I walk it. My answer this morning is yes, and I am saying it as somebody who has read the whole thing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
