What Kind Of Paper Is This On

This message is for to know what kind of document the promises she can already quote are actually written in, because she has been standing on sentences without knowing what holds them up

The urn had been hissing since half past eleven and nobody had touched the plate of coconut drops, because Sister Beverley was telling it with both hands going, and you do not interrupt a woman when both hands are going.

Sunday light came through the high windows of the church hall in long warm bars. Four women stood around her holding cups they had forgotten they were holding, and one of the little boys kept running the length of the floor for the pure joy of the sound his shoes made on it.

Her aunt Pearl, she said, lived thirty-one years in the house on Bethel Street. The man who owned it, Mr. Hendry, told her the week she moved in, in front of his own family: as long as you want it, Pearl, this house is yours. He said it again every Christmas. He meant every syllable of it.

Then Mr. Hendry died. His nephew came by with a folder under his arm, and it turned out that beautiful sentence had been spoken out loud for thirty-one years and had never once been put into anything that could hold it. It had been a kindness. It was true in his mouth. It held nothing at all.

"So the young woman at the legal clinic," Beverley said, "first thing out of her mouth. She doesn't ask me what he said. She asks me, what kind of paper is it on?"

"But he meant it," somebody said.

"He meant it." Beverley set her cup down on the trestle table. "Meaning it was never the question, baby. The question was what it was written in."

And then, because Beverley has never in her life left anybody standing at the cold end of a story, she told them the other half. Pearl's son put his mother's name on the deed of an apartment eleven years later, and Pearl slept in those rooms for the rest of her life without one bad night about it. Same woman. Same love from somebody who loved her. Completely different paper.

The urn hissed. Somebody finally took a coconut drop.

And you know both of those sentences by heart, only yours are not about a house.

You can quote them. He will never leave you nor forsake you. His mercies are new every morning. A peace that passes understanding. You learned them young, you have said them over your own bad nights, and you meant them. And somewhere underneath all of it there is a thin cold question you have never once said out loud in a church hall: what kind of paper is that on. Is it a lovely thing God feels about me. Or is it a deed.

Nobody has ever taken it down and read it to you.

Come and sit. We are going to read it.

What Kind Of Paper Is This On

Meaning it was never the question

Let me name something gently first, because I have watched it sit on good women for years and nobody ever calls it by its name. A person can love God with her whole life and still carry a low, permanent uncertainty about what she is actually standing on. From the outside it never looks like doubt. It looks like diligence.

And it is not your fault. Nobody laid the document open for you. The sentences were handed over one at a time, on cards and in choruses and over hospital beds, and every one of them was true, and not one person ever turned to the front of it and said, here is what these are written in.

So here is the ground, and it goes here in the middle of the teaching rather than as a soft word at the end. The covenant has two halves. One half is God's own oath, sworn and written down, and that half is settled, and it holds on a strong week and on a week when barely a prayer will form. The other half is your response, and it is real, and it is genuinely asked, and it is not the half holding the thing up.

Which means you are not carrying a kind remark that somebody warm said over you a long time ago. In Jeremiah 31:33 God does not say He hopes or He intends; He says I will, three times inside one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is at this moment lifting that written line off the page and laying it under your feet as floor you are already standing on.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.Jeremiah 31:33

Look at what kind of sentence that is. It is not affectionate and it is not encouraging. It is legal and it is warm at the same moment, which is what a covenant always is. He names the parties. He names what He is doing. He puts no condition on His own clause, and He needs no one standing by to remind Him of it later.

And notice where the writing goes, because that is the detail everybody skims. He never said He would hand out a copy to be kept somewhere safe; He said He would write it on hearts. So what you have is not a page in a drawer that a nephew could come and remove, it is a covenant set inside a person by His Spirit, which is precisely what God promised through Ezekiel 11:19 when He said He would take out the heart of stone and put in a heart of flesh.

What the young woman at the clinic was really asking

When she asked what kind of paper it was on, she was asking three things at once, and they are the same three worth asking about your own.

Who bound himself. Hebrews 6:13 says that when God made the promise to Abraham, having no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself. That is the whole answer to the first question. Nobody ever appointed you the guarantor of your own covenant. Psalm 89:34 has God saying He will not profane His covenant or alter what has gone out of His lips, and His Spirit keeps carrying that written line back to you every time your own performance reaches for the pen.

What exactly did He bind Himself to. Here is where a general feeling that God is good runs out, because a general feeling has no clauses in it. He named specific things. Law written on the inside. I will be their God. And in the very next verse, I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Those are commitments with edges on them, and a person can hold an edge.

So you have edges to hold now, and not a warm impression of God. Jeremiah 31:33 and 34 stack four I wills together with no if standing anywhere near them, and it is His Spirit, and not the strength of your grip, that keeps a written clause holdable at three in the morning.

And what happens in a bad year. Here is your half, said plainly. Something is asked of you. Walk with Him. Keep His word. Answer Him when He speaks. Love the people He set down beside you. Those are real terms, they are not decorations, and anybody who tells you nothing at all is asked has handed you half a document and called it generosity.

But look at what kind of thing they are. They are not the price of the house, because the price was settled outside a city on a hill and nothing of yours is outstanding on it. They are the shape of living in a house that already carries your name on the deed. And I am not going to number them into a list for you, because the moment your side becomes a scorecard it has stopped being a covenant and started being the very trap that has kept you reading.

You have a response to make, and you have the strength to make it in the same breath, because Philippians 2:13 says it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure, and the Spirit does that work inside the ordinary obedience of an ordinary Tuesday.

The breakthrough

Nothing about where you stand rests on the strength of your remembering, and that is the sentence to carry out of this room.

You are standing inside a covenant that was written before you ever went looking for it, and every promise you have been quoting has one answer underneath it: 2 Corinthians 1:20 says all the promises of God find their Yes in Him, and His Spirit is at work in you saying the Amen to that Yes, so the agreement is not sitting there waiting on your certainty.

So the way this moves from true to yours is unglamorous and it is old. Read it. Out loud. Both sides of it, the way Beverley tells a story, all the way to the warm end.

Declare this over yourself

Stand up if you can. The right to read your own covenant out loud was not earned this morning: it belongs to you in Christ, and it was given to you by the same One who wrote the document. Scripture is the ground under every line of this, and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines living rather than merely legal. What He does next with the page in your hands is His to decide, and the outcome is His.

  1. Thin cold question I never said out loud, you are not a doubt and you are not a sin, and today you are answered. Jeremiah 31:33 says God binds Himself in writing with I will and sets that writing on the inside of a person, and no deed has ever depended on the one living in the house remembering it every morning. In the name of Jesus I am reading the document I am standing in.
  2. Suspicion that my name is not really on it, you have no clause in this document and no standing to speak here. God said He would be their God and they would be His people, and He wrote my portion on the inside of me where no nephew with a folder can lift it off a wall. Christ settled my place, and I am living in it rather than waiting to be asked to leave.
  3. Lord, You did not hand me a warm feeling about Yourself, You bound Yourself in writing and then put the writing inside me. I thank You, because the half that holds this up was settled before I could read, and Your Spirit is steadying my hands on the half that is mine to answer. I am reading both sides out loud today, and I am reading them as a woman whose name is on the deed.
