Once As Somebody Who Belongs

Forty minutes early, every Sunday, for eight years.

The chairs live in a rack behind the side door and there are thirty two of them, and she knows without thinking about it that you take four at a time or the wheels catch on the strip where the carpet changes. Six down each side. Three across the back for the mothers who need to get out fast. It takes her twenty minutes and she is never once late for it and she has never once asked anybody to help.

She came into that building eight years ago through a door she genuinely did not expect to open for her, and nobody there has ever made her feel otherwise, not once, not by accident. That is not the problem. The problem is entirely inside her, and it has a shape, and the shape is a rack of chairs.

This particular morning is bright. The sun is coming straight down the length of the aisle the way it does about three weeks a year, and she can see it from the parking lot through the propped side door.

She comes in with her coat still over her arm, and the chairs are out.

All of them. Six down each side, three across the back, and somebody has even squared the ends up, badly, but they have tried. It was the teenagers. They did it for a reason of their own that had nothing to do with her, and one of them says good morning and goes off looking for a phone charger.

And she stands in that doorway with her coat over her arm and nothing whatsoever to do.

Understand that this is not disappointment. It is much stranger than disappointment. Her hands are empty, the room is ready, the light is beautiful, and for the first time in eight years there is no way for her to be useful before the music starts, which means there is no way for her to be anything except somebody who came.

Three women in the fourth pew are turned around laughing about something. One of them sees her in the doorway and, without breaking off her sentence, pats the bench beside her.

And those ten seconds are the hardest ten seconds of her whole week.

You know exactly what I am talking about, and you knew it in your body a second before you knew it in your head.

There is something you do. You have done it for years. You do it well and you do it gladly and if somebody took it off you tomorrow you would smile and say of course, and then you would go and sit in the car for a minute.

Because somewhere underneath it, without ever once deciding this, you have been treating it as the reason the door stays open.

Two women, one rack of chairs

Here is the thing that makes this category so hard to teach, and I want to say it slowly.

The action does not change. Not at all. Same chairs, same four at a time, same strip of carpet where the wheels catch. Watch her from the back of the room and you cannot tell the two women apart.

The difference is entirely in who is doing it. One woman is putting out chairs because she lives here. The other woman is putting out chairs because she is not sure yet, and has not been sure for eight years, and cannot think of a way to find out that does not involve chairs.

You are not being asked to change one thing you do this week. You are being asked to change which woman is doing it. That is not a piece of self improvement I invented over you; it is what is written across the whole document, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves a truth from the head, where it has been sitting politely for years, down into the hands.

He undertook the wanting itself

Now hear what God actually bound Himself to, because it is far stranger and far kinder than most people know it is.

He did not undertake to accept her chairs. He undertook to operate on the part of her that wants.

And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.Deuteronomy 30:6

Read the order of it, because the order is the whole teaching. He works on the heart. Then the loving. Then the living. The delight is downstream of something He committed Himself to do, which means delight was never the toll collected at the door on the way in.

You have a God who took responsibility for the state of your wanting, and He put it in writing before you were born. Deuteronomy 30:6 is the reference and it is His own undertaking in His own mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the surgeon who is presently doing that quiet work in a woman who thinks she is only carrying chairs.

So let me say the plain thing now, right here in the middle, because it belongs in the teaching and not tacked on at the end as a kindness. Two halves stand in this covenant and they are different in kind. God's half is settled: He undertook the heart, the wanting, the loving, the living, and He did not make any of it conditional on how anybody felt about a Sunday morning. Your half is a response: to obey, to serve, to come, to keep going. That response is real and it is genuinely asked of you and it matters. It is simply not the thing keeping the door open.

Obeying flat is still obeying

I have to guard something here, because this is exactly where a teaching like this turns cruel without meaning to.

Delight is where obedience is going. Delight is never a fee you have to produce at the entrance.

If you set the chairs out flat this morning, tired, faintly resentful, thinking about the thing your sister said, then you set the chairs out. That is obedience. It counts. Nobody with any authority is standing over you grading your motives, and I am certainly not going to start, and neither is the God who wrote a promise about growing the wanting in the first place.

You were never once required to feel it before you did it, and the requirement to feel it came from somewhere other than Scripture. Deuteronomy 30:6 has God doing the heart work and the loving arriving afterward, and His Spirit is not hurrying you through that order or scoring you on where you have got to in it.

This is yours today: the same twenty minutes, the same rack, and a completely different woman doing it. Nobody has to make that true, because it was promised and it is written, and the Spirit is simply carrying a written promise into a Sunday.
