Promises With Somebody Else's Name On Them

The box stood in the hallway for three days, because nobody in that house opens a box from the aunt overseas until everybody is there. So it waited for Sunday, and Sunday came the way Sunday always comes, loud and late and smelling of garlic, and after the plates were pushed back somebody carried it out to the courtyard and set it at the head of the table.

It was exactly what everybody expected. Coffee for the grandmother. A shirt for the cousin who is cold in every season including the hot ones. Chocolate that lasted about ninety seconds. A folded blanket that went straight over somebody's knees before it was even out of the plastic.

And near the bottom, a smaller one, wrapped separately, with a name written on the paper in the aunt's enormous looping hand.

He was the one who lifted it out, because he was the one sitting at that end. And he did the thing he has done at that table his whole life. He passed it on. Down to his left, without looking, because it was obviously for somebody else. It always is.

So it went down the table. Around the corner past the children. Up the other side. An uncle held it at arm's length and squinted. A niece read the name out and laughed and handed it on. It went the whole way around eleven people, and it came back and landed in front of him again, and by then the courtyard had gone quiet in that delighted way a family goes quiet when it has worked something out before you have.

And the grandmother, who had said nothing for four minutes, said, "Read it again, mi hijo."

It was his name. It had been his name the entire way around the table.

He sat there with his hand flat on the paper and could not work out why his throat had gone tight over a small wrapped thing from a woman he sees once every three years. It was not the thing inside. He never even opened it that afternoon.

It was that he had passed it on without looking. That is the part that got him. He had not weighed it and decided it was not for him. He had not even considered it. In that family the good things go to the people who need them, and somewhere along the line he had taken himself off that list so quietly that nobody, including him, had ever noticed him doing it.

And you have done this too, and not with a parcel.

You have sat under a hundred sermons and heard a hundred promises read out, and every single time you have passed it along. That one is for the widow. That one is for the young ones just starting out. That one is for people with real faith, the ones who pray for an hour without checking the time. You did not weigh it and decide. You handed it down the table without looking, because in your head the good things are addressed to other people and you are the one who carries the chairs.

The wrapping has your name on it. It has had your name on it the whole way around.

The promises that get handed on without looking

Here is what a lifetime in church quietly teaches, and nobody means to teach it.

Promises get quoted about people. About Abraham, about the missionary, about the grandmother in the story who prayed for forty years. And a promise quoted about somebody is a beautiful thing to hear and it lands two feet to your left. You go home warmed and still unaddressed, which is a strange and specific loneliness that a lot of faithful people carry and never name.

You are not eavesdropping on somebody else's mail. In Jeremiah 32:40 God is not describing His character to a crowd, He is undertaking something in the first person, and the Holy Spirit is not in the business of reading a man his neighbor's letters. What is written there was written to be received by the one who reads it.

And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.Jeremiah 32:40

Read His verbs, because they are the whole point. I will make. I will not turn away. I will put. Three undertakings in one sentence, all of them His, and the striking one is the middle: not turning away is the thing He binds Himself to. He is not promising to feel warmly toward them. He is promising not to leave the room.

You have an everlasting clause standing over you, and it is not a summary of how God generally is. That is written down with a chapter and a verse on it, and His Spirit takes a sentence like that and lays it against a man's actual life until it stops being a quotation and starts being an address.

Now the plain thing, and it belongs here in the middle of the teaching rather than at the end where it would sound like small print.

Two halves stand in this covenant and they are different in kind. His half is sworn. It is finished, it is on record, and it is not being reviewed. Your half is your answer: to believe Him, to say yes, to stay. Your half is real and it is genuinely asked of you, and it is not the thing keeping the covenant standing. You are standing on the sworn half and not on your own steadiness. Scripture says God swore by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by, Hebrews 6:13, and the Spirit is what turns that from a legal curiosity into ground you can put weight on.

And notice what this page will not do. It will not tell you what God is about to do in your life this year. That is not mine to say and anybody who says it is guessing out loud with your hope. What can be said, and what is worth more than a forecast, is what He has already sworn, in words, with the reference attached.
