His Side SettledGenesis 9:11

The Host Swore It First

This message is for to hear God quoted swearing His own oath, in a culture where he already knows exactly what it costs a host to give his word and has never once heard God given the same weight

The bus put Nabil down in the wrong village at the wrong hour, forty minutes past the turning he wanted, with the light already going orange along the tops of the walls.

He stood in the road with his bag and did the arithmetic of a man who is going to sleep outdoors. Then a man came out of a gate with a lamp in his hand, looked at him for about two seconds, and said three sentences.

You eat with us. You sleep here. You go in the morning when you are ready, and not when I am tired of you.

Nabil said the polite things. The man was not listening to the polite things. He had already taken the bag.

Inside there was a courtyard with a lemon tree in one corner, lamps going up along the wall one at a time, a wife who did not look at all surprised, and four children who looked delighted. They ate. Rice, beans in oil, bread, and the man kept pushing the dish across with the back of his hand in a way that made refusing impossible. Twice Nabil said he had had plenty. Twice more food arrived.

In the night he got up for water and saw his host asleep on a mat in the passage, and understood, the way a man understands something he was not meant to notice, whose bed he had been lying in.

And in the morning it got serious.

Somebody came to the gate early. Voices. Nabil stood inside the doorway with his bag already on his shoulder and heard his own father's name, and heard the word owed, and heard a story about two families and a piece of ground from before he was born.

And he heard his host say: he is my guest.

The other man kept going.

And the host said it again, not louder. He is my guest. He is under my roof and he has eaten my bread. Whatever is between our two houses is between you and me. Bring it to me tonight, after he has gone, and I will hear every word of it. Not now. Not at my gate. Not to him.

Then he came back inside, and he was smiling, and he made Nabil sit down again because there was tea, and he never mentioned it. Not once. Not on the walk down to the road.

You know what that cost. That is the point. You come from somewhere, or you have been somewhere, or you have simply watched one man do it once, and you know exactly what it costs a man to put his own name over a stranger and stand in his own gateway holding it there.

And you have never once heard the word of God given that same weight.

The Host Swore It First

He swore before anybody asked Him to

You already know how an oath works. That is the strange part.

You know it is not a mood, and not a nice thing said at a table that everyone forgets by morning. You know that a man who gives his word has moved the cost onto himself and off the other person, and that from that moment the guest is not the one carrying it. You know all of that in your body. And then somebody reads a verse out loud in a room and it lands like weather.

So here is the division this whole message runs on, and it goes here in the middle of the teaching rather than at the end. One half of this covenant is God's sworn oath, and that half is settled, closed, and carried entirely by His own faithfulness. The other half is your response, which is real, which is genuinely asked of you, and which is not the thing holding the roof up. Two different kinds of thing, and telling them apart is the whole difference between a guest and a debtor.

So stand on that before we go any further. You are on the sworn side of this house, in under the roof rather than out at the gate, and that is not a judgment I am making about you tonight. The Holy Spirit brought you this far and He does not leave a man guessing which half is which: He holds the oath of Genesis 9:11 open in front of you, written and never once withdrawn, and He puts you inside it.

Now hear Him swear. Not summarized. Not warmed up. Quoted.

I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.Genesis 9:11

Read who is speaking and read who is not. Nobody asked for this. Nobody negotiated it. A family walks out of a boat onto wet ground and before they have said anything at all, the God of heaven binds Himself in the first person to their future.

You are standing under a word that was given before you ever came up the road, and I am not offering you my warm opinion of God: Genesis 9:11 is Him swearing it in His own voice, and the Spirit of God is pressing that written sentence onto you now, at the exact place where you have been doing the arithmetic of a man about to sleep outdoors.

And then look at what He does with the sign.

I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.Genesis 9:15

I will remember. He did not hang that bow in the sky so that we would remember. He hung it where He looks and said the remembering was His job. That is a host tying the string on his own finger about you, and it is the most quietly astonishing sentence in the chapter.

You have a God who took His own memory and bound it, and that is not sentiment, it is written down in Genesis 9:15 in words He chose Himself, and His Spirit does not let a written oath go quiet in a person who is listening.

Centuries later He picks that same oath up and hands it to somebody who feels finished.

This is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you.Isaiah 54:9 and 10

So I have sworn. He puts His love in the same category as the sky over the flood, which is to say He puts it in the category of things that are no longer up for discussion.

And your side of it, which is short

Something is asked of you, and it does not get shrunk here to make you comfortable.

You are asked to take Him at His word. Come in off the road. Eat the bread. Live in the house as somebody who has been sworn over rather than as somebody being assessed at the gate. That is a real response and it has real shape to it, and refusing it is a real refusal.

But notice the kind of thing it is. Nothing you do at that table pays for the roof, renews the oath, or keeps the host willing. Scripture never once makes the sworn half of this depend on the responding half, and the Spirit of God who lives in you is not standing behind you with a tally, He is at your elbow saying eat.

The breakthrough

The oath is not waiting on your understanding of it. It was sworn out loud before you arrived and it has been holding the whole time you were standing in the road adding things up.

You are inside the house, not at the gate, and that is the settled half. Isaiah 54:10 has God putting His steadfast love beyond the reach of moving mountains, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to feel it first, He is telling you where you are standing while you still have the bag on your shoulder.

So the response is simple and it is yours. Put the bag down. Say the sworn sentences out loud in your own voice, in the first person, the way a guest repeats what the host said at the gate so that everybody in the passage can hear it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these on your feet if you can. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and was not issued this morning by anything you managed; Scripture is what every line stands on, the Holy Spirit is what makes them live rather than merely sound, and whatever He does at your gate from here He does in His own way and His own timing.

  1. Old grievance at my gate, you are talking to the wrong man. God establishes His covenant in Genesis 9:11 before anybody asked Him for it, and the One who swore it is the One standing in the doorway with His name over mine. In the name of Jesus I am sitting down at this table and drinking the tea.
  2. Fear that I am only tolerated here, you are not the word over this house. God says in Isaiah 54:10 that mountains may move and His steadfast love does not, and a love spoken in that category is not a welcome anybody is measuring by the day. I am a guest who has been sworn over, and I am eating.
  3. Jesus, You set the bow in Your own sky and You gave the remembering to Yourself. I thank You, because the half that holds this house up was sworn before I ever came up the road, and the half that is mine is only to come in, and by Your Spirit I am coming in. My bag is down and my hands are open.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
