Delight Beyond DutyPsalm 40:8

The Week I Did It All Like Admin

This message is for to do one ordinary obedient thing this week as somebody who belongs, after a month of doing every right thing with the flatness of clearing an inbox

Tess had done everything right for a month and had felt absolutely nothing doing any of it.

The alarm at ten to six and the prayer that followed it, on time, every morning, with a timer she did not need but used anyway. The Monday ride to the clinic for the neighbor who no longer drives. The text on Thursday to the friend waiting on results, sent, thoughtful, and composed in the car with the engine running. She read her chapter. She showed up. Nobody in her life would have described her as struggling.

She described it to herself once, at a light on Grange Road, as clearing an inbox. Item, item, item, done. And she felt bad about that, which she added to the inbox.

Tuesday is bread night. It has been bread night since her husband's mother taught her the folding, badly, in a kitchen much smaller than this one, twelve years ago. The bowl comes out at ten to six, the same as the alarm.

Her eight year old came round the counter and said, "Can I do the folding part?"

Tess had a sentence ready. It goes faster if I do it. This is true, and she has said it before, and it was already half out of her mouth.

And instead she heard herself say, "Fine. Get up here. We live in this house, we might as well make bread like it."

She meant it as a joke. Her daughter took it entirely seriously and climbed onto the chair.

It took forty minutes instead of twenty. There was flour on the cabinet handles for a week afterward and some in the cutlery drawer, which nobody has explained. At some point her husband came in and stood in the doorway laughing at the state of the pair of them, and the boy wandered through and stole a piece of dough, and Tess laughed with her hands still in it.

Later that night she thought: that is the first thing I have enjoyed since July.

Same bread. Same Tuesday. Same woman, doing the same obedient thing she had done for twelve years. One sentence said out loud before she started.

And you know that month. You have done every right thing and the doing of it has had all the warmth of answering email, and you have quietly wondered what is wrong with you, because everybody else seems to be enjoying it.

The flat month counted

Start here, because everything else in this message stands on it and almost nobody says it out loud.

Your flat obedience was obedience. All of it. The ride on Monday, the text on Thursday, the chapter you read with the affect of a person reading a manual: God received every one of those, and He did not mark any of them down for the way they felt going out. Nobody is grading your interior weather. Not on this page and not in heaven.

That matters because the verse this message is built on is the one most likely to be turned into a stick.

I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.Psalm 40:8

Read that as a destination rather than as a toll booth at the entrance. It is a sentence about where obedience is going, not the mood you must produce before you are allowed to obey. And notice the second clause, because it says where the delight lives: within my heart, which is the one address a person cannot reach into and rearrange by trying harder.

You are not disqualified by a flat month. That is not my sympathy talking; it is the plain shape of Psalm 40:8, which locates the delight somewhere inside a person rather than in their performance of enthusiasm, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your effort who does the work at that address.

And God bound Himself to the wanting

This is the part that changes the week, and it is a sentence God says about Himself.

I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.Jeremiah 32:40

I will put. In their hearts. He is not standing outside the house waiting for the right feeling to appear in the window. He committed Himself, in writing, to working the wanting into a person from the inside.

So the gladness you have been trying to manufacture for a month is on His side of this covenant, and Jeremiah 32:40 is where He said so. His Spirit is the one at work in the interior, and He is not in a hurry, and He has never made the arrival of a feeling the condition of anything.

Now the sentence this site exists to say, and it belongs here in the middle rather than at the end where a disclaimer goes. What Christ settled is settled and holds without you. Your response is real and it is genuinely asked and it goes on being asked, in bread and rides and Thursday texts. It is simply not the half that keeps this standing.

What actually changed on Tuesday

Nothing in the bread changed. Tess did not find a better recipe or a warmer feeling. What changed was the sentence she said before she started.

Duty asks, underneath everything: am I still allowed to be here. And a person carrying that question does every right thing at the correct time with the exact tension of somebody keeping a place. Belonging does not ask. It just makes bread, because that is what people who live in a house do in it.

You have a place in this house that was not issued to you this month and is not reviewed at the end of it. Jeremiah 32:40 calls it everlasting, which is a word chosen precisely so nobody would have to check, and the Holy Spirit inside a believer is the standing evidence that the arrangement is not on trial.

And hear the other edge of this, because it cuts both ways. None of that makes what you do optional. The rides, the texts, the chapter, the bread: they are asked of you and they matter and they are not decoration on a settled thing. What ends is the tension underneath them. What continues is the doing.

The breakthrough

You are not being asked to feel something before you are allowed to obey. You are being told whose house you are standing in while you do it.

That is the whole turn, and it is smaller than people expect. Psalm 40:8 puts the delight inside a person and Jeremiah 32:40 has God committing Himself to putting it there, and the Holy Spirit is doing that quietly, at His own pace, in an interior you have never been able to reach with willpower.

So do not wait for the feeling. Say the sentence instead, out loud, before you start the ordinary thing you were going to do tonight anyway. Not to summon anything. Just to tell the truth about where you live before you begin.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and was given to you rather than earned by a good month. Scripture is under every line, the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines living rather than merely encouraging, and whatever He grows in you from here is His to decide.

  1. Month of doing it all flat, you were never proof of anything about me. Psalm 40:8 puts delight where obedience is going rather than at the door where it starts, and Jeremiah 32:40 has God binding Himself to put the wanting inside a person. In the name of Jesus I am making the bread tonight as somebody who lives here.
  2. Fear that I am going through the motions, you have no verdict to give on my heart. Scripture says God Himself works the willing and the doing in a person, and He never once made the feeling the way in. The Holy Spirit is putting the wanting where I could never reach, and I am doing tonight's ordinary thing on purpose.
  3. Father, You bound Yourself to put the fear of You in a heart so it would not turn away, and You said it in Jeremiah 32:40 without asking how anybody felt on a Tuesday. I thank You that a flat month of obedience is obedience, and that the gladness is Yours to grow in Your own way and Your own time. In Your name I am saying out loud that I belong in this house before I start.
