Studying The Question Instead Of Answering

This message is for to answer the thing he has spent two years studying, and to notice that studying what is asked has become his way of not doing it

For two years Marcu kept a starter alive on the windowsill of his kitchen, in a jar with a rubber band around it to mark where it had risen the day before.

He fed it every morning before work. Equal weights, room temperature water, the flour he had settled on after eleven months of comparing. He knew the smell of it when it was ready and the smell of it when it had gone too far. He knew the hydration percentages of four countries. He had a shelf of books, and a notebook, and a second notebook for the things the first one had got wrong.

He had never baked a loaf.

Downstairs, on the ground floor of the same building, lived a man who had run a bakery for thirty one years before his knees retired him, and who had said the same thing to Marcu perhaps forty times, always in the same tone, never once with an edge on it.

"Come down some evening. We will make one together. Any evening."

And Marcu always said, in exactly the same tone back, "Let me finish this chapter."

One evening in June, when the light in that kitchen goes gold at about eight and stays that way for an hour, the old baker came up. He had a bag of flour under one arm and he was already laughing before the door opened, because he knew perfectly well what he was doing.

Marcu was at the table with a book open in front of him and the jar at his elbow.

The baker put the flour down. Then he reached across the table, closed the book, and left his hand flat on the cover.

"Come down."

"I am not ready."

"You have been ready for a year and a half."

"I would ruin it."

And the old man smiled at him with enormous affection and said the true thing, which is the thing nobody had said in two years.

"You are not unready. You are safe."

Marcu did not answer that, because there was no answer to it. He looked at the jar. Two years of feeding something faithfully, and the whole point of a starter is that it starts something.

They went down. He got the shaping wrong and the loaf came out flat on one side and slightly pale, and the two of them ate half of it standing up at eleven at night with the oven still ticking as it cooled.

And there is one thing being asked of you at the moment. You know what it is. You could describe it accurately to anybody who asked, from several angles, with the objections handled. You have simply never answered it, and somewhere in the second year the studying quietly became the way of not doing it.

Studying The Question Instead Of Answering

The knock is not an examination

Let me say the first thing plainly, as a man who loves books and would defend them in front of anybody. The reading was never the problem, and nobody is about to take it off you.

You are not in trouble for studying. Scripture praises the ones who searched it daily to check what they had been told, and the Holy Spirit is the One who gives understanding in the first place, so nothing in this article is going to turn learning into a fault. What happened is smaller and quieter than a fault. A good thing got put where a different thing goes.

Because here is the shape of what is actually at the door.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.Revelation 3:20

Read the verbs on each side and notice how unequal they are. On His side: stand, knock, come in, eat. On the side of the person inside the house: hear, and open. That is the whole of it. Two verbs, and one of them is just noticing.

This site does not pretend that a covenant has nothing in it for the reader to do, and that verse settles the argument on its own. There is an if in Revelation 3:20 and it is on the line: if anyone hears my voice and opens the door. A real term, in the text, not smoothed away.

But look at what kind of term it is. Not qualify. Not master. Not be ready. Open.

You have one thing being asked of you, and it is a hand on a handle, not a syllabus. The word says so in Revelation 3:20 without any decoration, and the Spirit of God is what makes a printed invitation sound like an actual voice on the other side of your door, which is why it has kept coming back to you for two years instead of going quiet.

Which half He settled, and which half He handed you

Here is the sentence, and it belongs in the middle of the teaching where you can lean on it.

The knocking is His and it is settled. The coming in is His and it is settled. He bound Himself to it in His own words, in the future tense of a promise rather than the conditional of a maybe: I will come in to him and eat with him. Your opening is real, it is asked for, and it is not the thing that keeps Him on the step.

And your answer matters. This is where an article gets kind at the wrong moment and tells a person that what they do makes no difference, which is not kindness, it is a demotion. You are being asked for something. A hand moved. A word said out loud. Revelation 3:20 puts a verb on your side of the sentence and does not apologize for putting it there, and the Holy Spirit does not treat your answer as a formality He is politely sitting through.

What is not on your side of the sentence is a schedule. Nothing in that verse mentions the hour, and I am not going to be the man who tells you that you are late. Two years of circling something is not disobedience with better manners. It is often what a careful person does with a thing they have understood is enormous.

You were not being measured across those two years, and no total was running anywhere. Scripture never once totals a delay against a person it is inviting, and the Spirit who kept the knocking gentle for that long is not about to change tone now that you have noticed.

I will not list what your answer should contain. The moment a response becomes a checklist it stops being a response and becomes an examination, and the last thing a person who has been studying for two years needs is one more exam to sit.

The breakthrough

The old baker was right and he was not being clever. Safe is a real place and people live there for years without ever calling it that.

You are not unready. You have had the answer to this in your hands long enough to have written a chapter about it, and I am not saying that as flattery: Revelation 3:20 asks for a hand on a door, and the Holy Spirit has kept that knock audible in you for two years, which is not the behavior of somebody who has given up on the house.

So answer it. One sentence. Not a plan, not a schedule, not a paragraph with the objections handled. The loaf will come out flat on one side and pale, and it will be a loaf, and the two of you will eat it standing up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing at your own table, with the book closed. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and was given to you rather than earned by two years of reading, so no part of this rests on how well prepared you feel. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes those lines live, and what He does after the door opens is His to decide, in His own way.

  1. Second year of notes, you are not an answer and you never were the answer. Revelation 3:20 says He stands at the door and knocks, and the verb He asks for on my side of that line is open. In the name of Jesus I am opening it tonight, with one sentence and no plan attached.
  2. Safety I found in never starting, you are not carefulness and I am handing you back. The word says His own voice is at the door, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a written invitation sound like a person standing there, so I am not turning this handle on my own nerve. I am answering it tonight, out loud, flat side and all.
  3. Lord, You have stood at that door and knocked for two years without once telling me I was late. Your word says You come in and eat with the one who opens, and Your Spirit is the reason I can hear You at all through a shelf of books. I am turning the handle now, and my one sentence to You is yes.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
