Golden hour on Sentinel, the whole crew strung out along the warm rock with their packs down and a water bottle going up and back down the line.
They had come up the long way for the practice and the view, and near the cairn they had fallen in with a hiker, an older woman with a hat and a good stick, who asked the obvious question.
"So who are you all, then?"
They went down the line. Wren said she runs the base. Del said swiftwater and gallows humor. Marisol said medic. Ansel said he reads water. Everybody laughed, because it is true and because it takes seven minutes.
And then it got to Bram Ostler, who has been on that team two years and four months.
"Oh," he said, "I just carry stuff."
There was a small pause, and the ridge went on being gold, and Wren, without turning around, said, "Say it."
He looked at his boots.
"Say it, Bram."
Now understand what she was asking for. Nobody was asking him to boast. Nobody was asking him to claim medic or rope lead or anything he had not been given. She was asking him for four words that every single person on that rock already believed and had believed for two years and four months.
He took a long time. Long enough that the hiker got interested. Long enough that Del stopped mid sip.
And then Bram said, to his boots, and not loudly, "I am on the team."
And Sentinel Ridge came apart.
Del hollered it back down the valley so the echo brought it up again. Marisol banged the water bottle on the rock. Somebody was clapping and somebody was yelling his name and Wren finally turned round and pointed at him and said, "There it is," and the older woman with the hat laughed and clapped too, without any idea what she was clapping for, which somehow made it better.
Bram stood there red to the ears having said four words that changed absolutely nothing about the facts and absolutely everything about him.
Now here is the part that is yours.
You have never once claimed a thing for yourself out loud in front of people. Not the good thing you did. Not the place you clearly hold in somebody's life. Not one single item of what God has actually put in your hands.
You have deflected it into a joke a thousand times, and everyone thinks you are humble, and you know perfectly well it is not that.

A claim is a second voice, not a first one
Let me name the thing before I lift anything, because it has been badly named for you your whole life.
What keeps a man from saying it out loud is almost never modesty. Modesty is quiet about what it has. This is different: this is a man who is not sure the thing is his to say, and who has worked out that if he never claims it he can never be caught claiming it. It is cheaper to be the one who carries stuff. Nobody audits the man who carries stuff.
But the reason that costs you so much is that a claim, in this document, is not a first voice. It is a second one.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.Romans 8:16 and 17
Look at the order of the speaking. The Spirit witnesses first. Our spirit witnesses with Him, which is the language of a second party agreeing with a testimony already entered, not the language of somebody standing up and asserting something on his own account.
So when you say it out loud, you are not the one making the claim. You are the one agreeing with it.
You have a witness who has already spoken before your voice ever enters, and I am not softening that to make you comfortable. It is written in Romans 8:16 with the Spirit as the one doing the bearing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that first testimony audible in a man who has spent his life waiting to be contradicted.
What is actually named in the terms
Now let us read what is in your hands, because this category is not a mood either.
to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.1 Peter 1:4
Three adjectives and a location. It does not spoil, it is not stained, it does not lose its color, and it is kept, which is a word about somebody else's custody. Not held by you. Kept for you.
And notice what the verse does not do. It does not tell you what your year is going to look like. It does not promise you an outcome you can hold me to. It names what is yours under the covenant and it stops, and the stopping is not stinginess, it is precision, which is what a term is.
So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.Galatians 4:7
Read the last two words. Through God. Not through your performance on the ridge, not through the two years and four months, not through anybody's vote, and the Spirit has never once been observed waiting for one.
You were made an heir through God rather than through a process you had to survive, and I am not being kind to you here; that is the wording in Galatians 4:7, and His Spirit is the One who takes a legal sentence like that and makes it feel like a place at a table rather than a technicality.
Which half is settled, and which half is yours
Here is the sentence this whole thing stands on, and it goes here in the middle of the teaching rather than at the bottom in small letters.
The half that holds this up is what God has already settled and already keeps, and that half does not depend on whether you can say it. The half that is yours is your response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it is not the half carrying the weight. Both are true at once and neither one lets the other off.
So do not hear me saying the saying does not matter. It matters. Scripture is full of taking hold, laying hold, receiving, and none of those are passive verbs. A man who never once agrees out loud with what has been testified about him is living below a document he technically owns, and that is a real loss and I am not going to call it nothing.
But hear the order, because the order is the whole relief. The inheritance is not created by your claim. It is kept, and the Spirit entered His witness to it long before your voice did, whether you have ever said a word about it or not. Your saying is the second voice, not the first, and a second voice cannot be an overreach.
This is where it stops being information about heirs and becomes where you stand.
You have an inheritance kept for you rather than earned toward, and I am not putting my own generosity over you. First Peter 1:4 says kept, in the passive, with the keeping done by somebody who does not lose things, and the Holy Spirit is pressing that now into the place where the deflection lives.
So take hold of one part of it. Not all of it. One. Say it out loud in a room where the air can carry it, and if your voice goes strange halfway through, that is normal, and it does not weaken the sentence.
You are not standing up to make a claim. You are standing up to agree with one that was written down long before this evening and that the Spirit has already spoken over you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing, and let your voice be as unsteady as it needs to be. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than won by achievement. Scripture is the ground under every line here, and the Holy Spirit is what makes these words living rather than merely legal. What He unfolds out of this from here is His to decide, and the outcome is His.
- Habit of saying I only help out, you are not modesty and you never were. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness first and our spirit bears witness with Him, which makes my sentence the second voice in the room and not the first. In the name of Jesus I am agreeing out loud today with what He has already testified.
- Rule that claiming is bragging, you have no jurisdiction over a thing that was kept for me. First Peter 1:4 calls the inheritance imperishable and undefiled and kept, and kept is a word about His custody and not about my nerve. I am taking hold of one part of it tonight, out loud, where somebody can hear me.
- God, You made me an heir through Yourself and never once through the length of my service. Your word in Galatians 4:7 says son first and heir second, and Your Spirit is bearing that witness in me right now while my voice is doing something strange. I am saying the true sentence in Your name tonight, and I am saying it where the air can carry it.
