Inheritance Made Yours1 Peter 1:4

The One That Arrived Late

This message is for to take hold of something now, rather than waiting the way he waited years for a family inheritance that finally arrived long after it would have helped

The house had four rooms around a courtyard, a lemon tree in the corner that never gave much, and a stone bench where his grandmother used to sit and shell beans in the shade.

Wadih was born in that house. So was his father. When his grandfather died the whole thing went into a dispute between four uncles, and the dispute lasted nineteen years.

Nineteen. He was thirty-two when it started and he was fifty-one when it ended. In between, one uncle died, another stopped speaking to the family entirely, papers were lost and found and lost again, and twice a year somebody would call and say it was nearly done. He raised his own children in a rented apartment on the fourth floor of a building on a main road, in two bedrooms, with a balcony you could not sit on because of the noise.

He used to describe the courtyard to them at bedtime. The lemon tree. The bench. Where he kept the tortoise. His daughter, who is a serious person, once asked him why they did not just live there, and he said it was complicated, and she never asked again, and that was somehow the worst evening of the whole nineteen years.

And then it came through.

There was a golden evening in that courtyard, and everybody came, and it was genuinely wonderful. His cousin brought the keys on an iron ring the size of a bracelet and held them over his head and made a speech nobody could hear because everybody was talking at once. There were sweets. Somebody's small children ran around the lemon tree until they fell over. Wadih stood in the middle of his grandmother's courtyard at fifty-one years old with the keys in both hands and everybody laughing at him because he could not say anything.

And it was good. It was completely good, and he has never once been ungrateful for it.

It was also nineteen years after the thing he had actually wanted it for. His children were grown. The bedtime stories were over. There was nobody left to raise in that courtyard, and the girl who once asked him why they did not just live there has an apartment of her own now in another city.

So he keeps the house, and he loves the house, and he has quietly learned something about the shape of the world that he has never said out loud to anybody. It comes. It usually comes. But it comes after.

And that is how you hold what God has said. Not with doubt exactly. You would call yourself a believer and you would be right. But somewhere in you everything He has promised sits in a file with four uncles arguing over it, and you expect it eventually, and you expect it late, and you have already made your peace with living in the rented apartment.

The One That Arrived Late

Kept is not the same word as contested

Start with the one word in the clause that a man in a rented apartment reads straight past.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.1 Peter 1:3 and 4

Kept. Guarded, reserved, held for a named person. That is not the language of something in dispute. Nobody is arguing over it, nothing about it depends on which uncle outlives which, and there is no file anywhere with your name on it and a stack of contradictory papers underneath.

You are named on something that is being guarded rather than contested, and this is not me softening a hard wait: 1 Peter 1:4 says kept for you in exactly those words, and the Spirit of God is pressing that written line onto the part of you that has already made its peace with arriving too late.

Now, the division this whole message stands on, and it belongs here in the teaching rather than at the end. One half of this covenant is God's own commitment, and that half is settled, finished, and held by His faithfulness alone. The other half is your response, which is real, which is genuinely asked of you, and which is not what is keeping any of it safe. Nothing you do guards the inheritance. What is asked of you is that you take hold of what has already been put in your name.

And some of it is not in the future at all

Here is where the man in the rented apartment gets caught, because he assumes that all of it is later. Some of it is later. Not all of it is later, and the document is specific about which is which.

And the LORD said to Aaron, You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.Numbers 18:20

Read that out loud twice, because it is the strangest sentence in this whole message. God does not hand over a portion. God says that He is the portion. In His own voice, in the first person, He binds Himself to be the thing inherited, and the Holy Spirit does not read a clause like that as history.

You have a portion who is a Person, and that is not a poetic way of saying you have nothing yet: Numbers 18:20 is God naming Himself as the inheritance, and His Spirit is the One making that clause present rather than historical inside you.

And then look at what the document says the Spirit Himself is doing in the meantime.

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it.Ephesians 1:13 and 14

The guarantee. In that world a guarantee was not a promise on paper, it was the first real part of the thing itself, handed over early so that both sides knew the rest was coming. Not a receipt. A piece of it, in your hands, now.

So the Holy Spirit in you is not the waiting room. He is the first part of the estate, already handed over, in the rented apartment, on the fourth floor, with the noise coming off the main road.

The breakthrough

You are not waiting on a decision. That is the thing to hear tonight.

The inheritance is kept according to 1 Peter 1:4, God has named Himself the portion in Numbers 18:20, and the Holy Spirit was handed over as the first genuine part of it rather than as a note promising it, so the phrase somewhere in a file with four uncles arguing over it does not describe anything in this document.

What is being asked of you now is not more patience. Patience you have in abundance; you have nineteen years of it. What is asked is that you put your hand on one part of what is already in your name and say so out loud, tonight, in the room you are in.

Take hold of one thing. Not the whole estate, not the future, not the timing, which is His to decide and His alone. One clause. Out loud, in your own voice, tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your feet if you can. This authority is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than won in a dispute; Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit is what makes them living rather than merely hopeful, and when and how He hands over the rest is His to decide and in His own timing.

  1. Nineteen years of waiting on a decision, you are not how God holds things. 1 Peter 1:4 calls this inheritance kept, and kept is a word for guarded and not a word for contested. In the name of Jesus I am putting my hand on one part of it out loud tonight.
  2. Fear that everything reaches me too late, you are answered by a portion who is a Person. God says in Numbers 18:20 I am your portion and your inheritance, and a God who names Himself as the estate is not somewhere in a file waiting on the uncles. I am taking hold of Him tonight, in one sentence, in this room.
  3. Lord, You called Yourself my portion before You handed me anything else, so the best clause in this whole document turns out to be Your own name. I thank You, because the inheritance is kept and never contested, and Your Spirit was handed over as the first real part of it and He is in me now. My hands are open and I am taking hold.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
