Four years she had been on that waiting list. Plot fourteen, the one at the far end with the pear tree nobody prunes, and on a Saturday morning in March they called her down to the shed to sign for it.
The shed smelled of creosote and tea. Three of them on the committee, a folding table, a tin of biscuits with the lid off. The chairman put a laminated sheet in front of her with a line drawn straight down the middle in marker pen, and he read it out loud to her, both sides, the way he does for everybody, because he says people never read them otherwise.
Our side, he said. Water to the standpipe from April. The gate mended. The track kept passable. The hedge cut twice a year. And we do not take a plot off anybody for one bad season.
Your side. Work it. Keep your own path clear. Shut the gate behind you.
She looked at it for a moment and then she said, "Is that everything? Is there another page?"
And he laughed, not unkindly, and said, "That's the whole of it, love. That's the sheet."
She still could not settle. She took it home and read it again at the kitchen table with her coat still on, hunting for the sentence that would catch her out later.
And you have been doing that for years, only not about a vegetable patch. Somebody told you at some point that God's covenant with you has no conditions in it whatsoever, and you nodded, and you could not make it fit anything you were reading. Or somebody else made you feel that there was a running total somewhere with your name at the top of it. Either way you have been waiting for a second page. You would like, just once, to see the actual sheet.
The sheet exists and you may read it
Let me name the weight first, because it is not a small one and it is very rarely said out loud.
Living inside an agreement nobody has ever shown you is exhausting in a particular way. It is not the same as doubting God. You can love Him and serve Him and still carry a low permanent alertness, the way a person carries a debt they cannot remember taking out, listening for the letter. And nobody notices it happening, because from the outside it looks like diligence.
So here is the first thing, and it is not a closing disclaimer, it is the ground everything else stands on. This covenant has two halves. One half is God's oath, and that half is settled and finished and holds without any help from you. The other half is your response, and it is real, and it is asked, and it is not what is holding the thing up. Everything that follows is just those two sentences with the detail put back in.
When God desired to show more convincingly the unchangeable character of His purpose, He guaranteed it with an oath.Hebrews 6:17
Read what that verse says God was worried about. Not obedience. Clarity. He was concerned that the heirs might be left guessing, so He did the strongest thing available in the ancient world and swore to it. You have a God who took a step specifically to remove uncertainty from you, and Hebrews 6:17 says so in the plainest language it owns, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that off the page and puts it where your alertness lives.
Which is exactly what the pictures show
Long before that letter was written there was a night in Genesis where God cut a covenant with Abram. The animals were divided, the pieces laid out, and in that culture both parties walked between them. Abram slept through it.
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.Genesis 15:17
One party walked. Only one. God bound Himself in a ceremony where He took both ends of the risk, and the man He was binding Himself to was unconscious in the dark at the time.
That is what settled means. And here is the specific thing He committed Himself to, in His own words, which is worth reading slowly rather than skimming:
I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.Jeremiah 31:33 and 34
I will, four times, and not one if you among them. You have those sentences standing over you as written commitments rather than as a general sense that God means well, and His Spirit is the one who wrote that law inside a person in the first place, exactly as the verse says He would.
And your side is real
Now the other column, and this site does not shrink it.
Something is asked of you. Anybody who tells you nothing is asked has handed you half a document and called it generosity. Walk with Him. Keep His word. Love the people He put near you. Answer when He speaks. Those are terms and they are not decorative.
But notice what kind of thing they are. They are not a price, because the price was settled on a hill outside a city and no installment of yours is outstanding. They are the shape of life inside the agreement, the way working your plot is the shape of having one rather than the condition of keeping it.
Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.Philippians 2:12 and 13
Both halves in one breath. Work it out, and He is the one working in you. You have His own energy inside your obedience according to Philippians 2:13, which means the response He asks for is a response He also supplies by His Spirit, and that is the difference between a covenant and an invoice.
I am not going to list your side for you in numbered points. The moment a covenant becomes a scorecard it has stopped being a covenant, and you have had enough of scorecards.
Nothing here is going to be produced against you later. That is not a mood, it is what an oath is for.
You are holding the whole agreement already, and there is no second sheet waiting behind it with your name on the wrong side of the page. That is not my reassurance to hand out: Hebrews 6:17 says God stepped in with an oath so that the people the promise belongs to would be left no room to wonder, and His Spirit is in the room with you turning that written oath from a thing that is true into ground under your feet.
And the way this moves from true to yours is unglamorous and it is the same way it has always been. Jesus set the amount of faith needed at the size of a seed you would barely feel in your palm, and then put the whole weight on the mouth: say to this mountain (Mark 11:23), and the Spirit carries a said thing where a thought never goes. Not because the words are powerful. Because a person who has spoken has stopped negotiating with themselves.
So take the sheet out and read it. Both sides, out loud, the way the chairman does it, because people never read them otherwise.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing up if you can. Christ is in you, so the right to read the terms of your own covenant was never granted by anybody who could withdraw it. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit is what makes them living rather than merely legal. What He does with your side of the page from here is His to unfold, and the outcome is His.
- Fine print I was never shown, you have no page in this document. Hebrews 6:17 says God guaranteed His purpose with an oath so that the heirs would be left in no doubt, and nobody swears an oath and then buries a clause underneath it. In the name of Jesus I am reading both sides of this sheet out loud.
- Fear that I have already broken a clause, you are answered inside the terms and not outside them. God said in Jeremiah 31:34 that He would remember their sin no more, and the Holy Spirit is the one who wrote that mercy into me rather than over me. I am responding today, and I am not paying.
- Lord, You passed between the pieces alone while the man You were binding Yourself to slept in the dark. I thank You, because the half that holds this up was never mine to hold, and the half that is mine You are working in me while I do it. My answer today is yes, and yes is a response and not an installment.
