Mercy Written InHebrews 8:12

I Broke The One Rule Of My Own House

This message is for to find out what the terms provide for the week he failed at the one thing he has always told other people matters most

Hisham is the one in that family who says it. He has said it at every wedding and every funeral and most Thursdays for thirty years: whatever else you do, you show up.

He taught it to his nephews before they could read. He said it to his own children so often they used to mouth it behind his back. You do not have to fix it, you do not have to have the money, you do not have to know what to say. You show up. That is the whole rule of this house.

And in March, he did not.

He knew about it. He had known for two weeks. There were reasons, and the reasons were real, and every one of them would have sounded acceptable if he had said them out loud to anybody, which is precisely why he has never said them out loud to anybody. He simply did not go. And then the day passed, and then it was a week, and then it was a month, and the thing he had missed could not be attended late.

So he stopped coming to the Thursday table.

Not dramatically. He was busy. He was tired. There was traffic on the ring road. Four Thursdays went by and nobody said anything to him about it, and he understood the silence exactly the way a man in that condition understands silence.

Then in the fifth week he went. He drove out there with a speech.

He had worked on it. It was a good speech, honest and short, and it did not make excuses, and it ended with him saying he would understand entirely if things were different from now on. He got out of the car in the lane and stood in the doorway of that courtyard with the lamps already lit and the table already full and steaming, and he opened his mouth.

And his grandmother, who is eighty-eight and sits at the head of that table and has never in her life let anybody finish a sentence she did not want, put one hand up and said: come in, the food is going cold.

He tried again.

She said: Hisham. Sit down.

And his cousin, who found the whole thing enormously funny, got up and towed him to the chair that had been sitting empty at that table for five weeks, and pushed him into it, and put a plate in front of him.

Later, out by the gate, that cousin said the thing that has kept Hisham awake since. Your grandfather made that rule the year he came back from the sea, he said. Not the showing up rule. The other one. He said nobody in this house has to earn the chair twice.

And you have a week like that. Not a small failure. The one thing, the thing you have told other people matters most, and you failed at it, and you have been standing in a doorway ever since with a speech that you have improved several times.

I Broke The One Rule Of My Own House

The clause was written before the week happened

Open the document at the place people never open it, which is the place where it deals with failure.

Most of us assume mercy is what happens when a covenant stops working. Something goes wrong, the agreement is suspended, and then kindness arrives from outside it, as an exception, as a favor, on terms that are quietly worse than the original ones. That is what a probation is. That is what Hisham was expecting in the doorway, and honestly it is what he was offering to accept.

That is not what this document says. Read it.

For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.Hebrews 8:12

Now look at where that sentence sits. It is not an addendum. It is not a note in the margin added later by somebody kind. It is the last clause in the list of clauses that make up the covenant itself, in the same run of I will sentences as putting the law in their minds and being their God. The mercy is not the repair of the agreement. The mercy is a term of the agreement.

You are inside a document that had your March written into it before March, and this is not me being gentle with you: that is the plain shape of Hebrews 8:12, and the Holy Spirit is setting that clause down over the five weeks you have spent not coming to the table.

And the terms go further, because they name who acts when the clause is invoked.

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1

Read both halves of that verse and do not let anybody hand you only one of them. So that you may not sin: the aim is real and it is stated first, and nothing here turns failure into a plan. And then, in the same breath, if anyone does sin. The document says it out loud. It anticipates the week. And it does not leave you to represent yourself in it. It names the advocate by name, and the name is Jesus Christ the righteous.

You have an advocate standing up in the room where you assumed you were being discussed, and that is written in 1 John 2:1 rather than hoped for, and His Spirit is not asking you to prepare a defense He already has covered.

What is settled and what is yours

Here is the division, and it belongs here in the teaching rather than tacked on at the end.

One half of this covenant is God's own commitment, mercy included, and that half is settled, finished, and carried by His faithfulness alone. The other half is your response, which is real, which is genuinely asked of you, and which is not what has been holding this up through March or any other month. Both halves are true at once.

So no, this does not mean the failing did not matter. It mattered. You know it mattered, and the reason a man builds a speech at all is that carelessness was never the problem. What it means is that the mattering and the belonging are two different questions, and the document answers them separately, and it answered the second one long before you got in the car.

And notice what nobody at that table did. Nobody itemized it. Nobody made him go through it in order. Nobody set out what the new arrangements would be for a man who had failed once. The chair was simply still there, in the same place, and it had been kept.

The breakthrough

Put the speech down. Not because it was insincere. Because it is answering a charge that this document does not bring.

You are not on probation and there is no arrangement in force, and Hebrews 8:12 is the clause: God binds Himself to be merciful toward iniquities and to remember sins no more, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at that gate holding a list, He is at your elbow moving you toward a chair that has been kept.

And your side of it is real and it is simple. Come in. Sit down. Do the next thing that is actually asked of you, which is almost never the enormous thing you have been imagining and almost always the ordinary Thursday. The rule of the house still stands: you show up. It has just never once been the thing that bought you the chair.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in the doorway, if that is where you are. This authority belongs to you in Christ and it was given to you, not earned back this evening; Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit is what makes them living rather than merely brave, and how He deals with March from here is His to decide and in His own timing.

  1. Speech I have been rehearsing in the doorway, you are not the price of this chair. Hebrews 8:12 has God binding Himself to be merciful toward iniquities and to remember sins no more, and He put that clause inside the terms instead of adding it afterward as a favor. In the name of Jesus I am coming in, because the food is going cold.
  2. Fear that I am a hypocrite now, you are answered by an advocate and never by my record. The words if anyone does sin are written into 1 John 2:1 and the document names who stands up when they are read: Jesus Christ the righteous. I am not on probation and I am sitting down at this table tonight.
  3. Jesus, You are named in the terms as the One who advocates, and You were named there long before the week I failed. I thank You, because the mercy was written in rather than handed out afterward, and by Your Spirit I am putting the speech down where I stand. My chair was never mine to lose, and I am in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
