The Strong Party Signed First

Priya had rehearsed the whole thing in the car.

Two years on the list for the conservation workshop, and the letter had come, and the letter had been warm, and none of that had helped one bit. Warm letters were the easy part. This morning was the part where somebody sat her down and told her what it would actually cost her, and she had built a dignified sentence to say when they did. Something calm. Something that did not sound like a girl who had been waiting two years.

Dee drove her in and would not go home. "I will be on the steps," Dee said. "Go on."

The room upstairs had a low window and a bench under it and the smell of beeswax. The director was already there with the folder open in front of her, and she turned it around and slid it across the table before Priya had finished sitting down.

"Ours first," she said. "That is how it is done here. Read that side."

Two years of bench. A named mentor, three mornings a week. Tools out of the cabinet, hers to use, replaced when they wear out. The workshop heated through the winter. And a line at the bottom in the plainest English Priya had ever read in her life: we do not put anybody off this bench for a bad month.

Priya looked at the foot of the page and stopped. The signature was already there. Dated the previous Tuesday.

"You signed it before you met me," she said.

"We signed it when we chose you." The director sounded faintly amused, the way people do when the thing you find astonishing is just Tuesday to them. "Nobody is on trial for a place that has already been given. Now read your side. Come three mornings. Work the bench. And tell me the day the work defeats you instead of the week after."

Priya read it twice. She looked for the sentence underneath the sentence. She has a good eye and there was nothing there to find.

She came down into full sun at about eleven with a closed folder held against her chest, and Dee was sitting on the second step from the bottom exactly where she said she would be, and Priya started laughing before she reached her, the loose helpless kind of laughing you cannot do politely, because she had spent two years bracing for a morning that turned out to have gone entirely in her favor.

And you know that bracing. Not about a workshop. Somewhere along the way you picked up the idea that there is a catch in this thing with God, a clause somewhere under the kindness, and ever since you have been reading your own life the way Priya read that page, hunting the sentence under the sentence. So let us do what the director did. His side first.

Ours first, and the ink was already dry

Bracing is quiet work. From the outside it never looks like doubt, it looks like diligence: the early arrival, the extra shift, the eye that keeps scanning a kindness for the clause underneath it. People do it for decades inside a faith they genuinely love, and nobody notices, least of all them.

Paul writes one line about ordinary human agreements that is very easy to skim.

To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.Galatians 3:15

He is arguing from the low bar on purpose. You know how this works with paperwork between people, he says. Once it is ratified it is closed. Nobody annuls it. And here is the half that lands straight on the bracing: nobody adds to it either. Not the other party. Not afterward. Not on the day they change their mind about you.

So take that off the table and leave it off the table. You are standing inside an agreement that was shut to additions long before you ever got anxious about it, and I am not asking you to accept my reassurance for that. I am handing you Galatians 3:15, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a written line like that one and sets it down under a person, exactly where the dread has been standing.

What He put on His side of the page

Now open it and read His column, because this is the part almost nobody has ever had read out to them.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.Ezekiel 36:26 and 27

Count the verbs and notice whose they are. I will give. I will remove. I will put. I will cause. Four commitments in three lines, and every one of them is God moving first, on the inside of a person who has not yet done a single thing.

Then look at what He bound Himself to specifically, because it is startling. He bound Himself to the walking. Not only to forgiving a failure to walk. He said He would put His Spirit inside a person so that obedience would rise from within instead of being demanded from without. You have a God who signed for the enabling before He ever asked for the effort, and that is not a warm feeling, it is Ezekiel 36:27, and anybody can go and check it.

This is why the greater party moves first in every covenant in Scripture worth the name. The lesser party cannot carry the risk and everybody knows it. Where there was no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself: a God methodically removing every remaining source of uncertainty from you, including Himself.

And your side is real. It is on the same page.

Now the other column, and this page will not shrink it, because kind lies have done quite enough damage in your life already.

Something is asked of you. Anyone who tells you that nothing whatsoever is asked has handed you half a document and called it generosity, and some part of you can feel the missing half, which is exactly why the reassurance has never once settled you.

The director did not stop at her own column. Come three mornings. Work the bench. Say the day the work defeats you rather than the week after. Those were real terms. What they were not was a price, because the place had already been given, and nobody buys what they are already holding.

Yours reads the same way. Walk with Him. Keep His word. Love the people He has actually put near you. Tell Him the day it defeats you instead of the month after. Those are terms and they are not decorative, and I am not going to number them for you, because the moment a covenant becomes a scorecard it has stopped being a covenant, and you have had enough scorecards to last you. And the Spirit is not the auditor of that column. He is the One at work in it.

So here is the sentence this whole site exists to say plainly, and it belongs here in the middle of the teaching and not tacked on at the end like a legal notice. One half of this document is God's oath, and that half is settled and finished and holds without any help from you. The other half is your response, and it is genuinely asked, and it genuinely matters, and it is not the thing holding the document up. Both are true in the same breath and neither one weakens the other.

You were never asked to guarantee this agreement. You were asked to live inside one that is guaranteed already, and that difference is not a technicality: Ezekiel 36:27 has God putting His Spirit into a person precisely so that the walking would be His work and theirs at the same moment.

Why she read it twice anyway

Priya read the page twice looking for the trap, and she is not foolish for that, she is experienced. Most agreements really do have one.

But experience is a witness, not a judge. It reports what has happened. It does not get to rule on what is written. You are not being naive when you take God at His written word about His own oath, you are being accurate, and the Spirit is the One who keeps insisting on that accuracy at the hour when your history starts arguing back.
