Terms Laid OpenHebrews 9:15

You Are Allowed To Read It

This message is for to stop treating it as presumption to read the terms of a covenant he is inside, and to open it as a party to it rather than as an intruder

The reading room sat on the second floor, up a staircase with a bend in it, above a bakery on a street that smelled of warm bread from six in the morning.

Tomas brought his daughter there every Saturday for four years. She was nine when they started. She went up those stairs two at a time with her coat half off, and he stayed below by the returns basket, standing, because sitting down felt like settling in.

He had a card. He had filled out the form himself in the first week, printed his name in the little boxes, signed at the bottom where the keeper pointed. He had simply never gone up.

It was not fear exactly. It was a sense that the upstairs room belonged to a different kind of member. The ones with reading lists. The ones the keeper knew by name, who came in on weekdays and left their bags behind the desk without asking.

The keeper was a small gray haired man who had run the place for thirty years and made tea in a dented pot at eleven and again at three. One Saturday in fall he came down for water and found Tomas at the foot of the stairs, coat on, looking up.

"You have stood there a long time," he said. "Come up."

"I am waiting for my daughter. I am fine here."

The keeper set the pot down on the desk, which he never did. "Come up," he said again, and there was so little weight in it that Tomas went.

The room was smaller than he had pictured and warmer. Two long tables. A window open onto the street, so the smell of the bread came up with the noise of it. Six or seven people at the tables, one of them his daughter, who looked at her father in the doorway with an expression he would remember for a long time.

"Sit anywhere," the keeper said.

"I did not think this part was for me."

"You signed for it. First week. You printed your name in the boxes and I countersigned it and it went in the drawer. That is what the form was." He was already pouring. "You have stood at the bottom of my stairs for four years like a man delivering something."

Tomas laughed then, the way a person laughs when the joke is entirely on him and it costs him nothing at all.

He sat down. And after a minute, because he could not help it, he asked it anyway.

"Is there anything up here I am not allowed to open?"

The keeper looked at him over the tea. "You are a party to this," he said. "Not a guest."

And that is your question too, only not about a room above a bakery. You are inside an agreement with God. You know you are inside it. And you have never once opened it and read the terms of it, because somewhere along the line you decided that reading them would be presumption, or somebody left you with the impression that the terms were the committee's business and not yours. So you stand at the bottom of the stairs. Coat on. Waiting for a person with a reading list to tell you what is in it.

You Are Allowed To Read It

This document was never the committee's paper

Let me name the weight first, because it is real and it is almost never said out loud.

Living inside an agreement nobody ever opened in front of you is a particular kind of tiredness. A person can love God, serve Him, turn up every week, and still carry a low steady sense of being on the premises by permission rather than by right. From the outside it looks like modesty. From the inside it feels like standing.

So begin where the document begins, which is with who is in it. You are a party to this covenant and not a visitor in it, and that is not my generosity toward you. Hebrews 9:15 calls the people it concerns those who are called, and it says the mediator went to his death so that they would receive what was promised. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to work up a right to read that sentence. He is the One who put your name where it already is.

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.Hebrews 9:15

Read the shape of it. A mediator is not a doorman. A mediator is the person who stands between two parties and makes the agreement between them hold, and nobody appoints a mediator for an arrangement that concerns only one side. His presence in that verse is the proof that there is a second party, and the second party is the reader.

And here is what He put His own name to. Not a general impression that God means well, which is the thing you already have and the thing that has not held you. Specific sentences, in His own words.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.Hebrews 8:10

Count the verbs and notice who owns every one of them. I will, I will, I will, three times in one sentence, and not one of them is waiting to see how your week went. You are standing on a clause that was settled in the mouth of God long before anyone taught you to be quiet about it, and the Spirit who writes a law inside a person is the same One at work in you while you read the verse that says He does it.

Which half is settled, and which half is your answer

Here is the sentence this whole site exists to say, and it belongs here in the middle of the teaching rather than at the end as a soft disclaimer.

One half of this covenant is God's oath, and that half is settled and finished and holds without any assistance from you. The other half is your response. It is real, it is genuinely asked for, and it is not the thing holding the covenant up. Everything else is those two sentences with the detail put back in.

So your side is not nothing, and this site will not shrink it in order to sound kind. Something is asked. Walk with Him. Keep His word. Answer when He speaks. Love the people He put near you. Anybody who hands you the first half and calls the second half optional has given you half a page and called it good news.

Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."John 14:23

Notice what kind of thing is being asked there. Not a price. The price was settled outside a city on a hill and no installment of yours is outstanding against it. You are being asked for the shape of a life inside the agreement, the way sitting down at the table is the shape of having a seat rather than the rent on it, and John 14:23 says the Father and the Son come and make their home in exactly that. The Holy Spirit does the keeping in you while you do the keeping.

I am not going to number your side for you. The moment a covenant becomes a scorecard it has stopped being a covenant, and a man who has spent years at the bottom of the stairs does not need one more list to fail.

So take the word presumption off the table, because it does not belong on it. Presumption is claiming what was never said to you. You are doing the opposite of that: you are opening what was written to you and reading what is actually in it. Scripture calls the people this concerns the called, and the Spirit of God does not hand a person a covenant and then class him an intruder for looking at it.

The breakthrough

Nothing at the top of those stairs was ever closed to Tomas. Four years of standing did not add one line to his card, and would not have added one if he had stood there forty.

You are not an intruder in your own covenant. Hebrews 9:15 puts the promised inheritance in the hands of the called, and you were called, and that is not a compliment paid to you, it is your position in a written document. The Holy Spirit is the One who seals that, which is exactly why it does not rest on how convincingly I say it.

So read it. Not to find out whether you qualify, and not standing up with your coat on. Read it the way a party to an agreement reads it, sitting down, at the table, with the window open.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting down, with your coat off. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and was given to you rather than earned this morning, so there is no presumption anywhere in these lines. Scripture is the ground under every one of them and the Holy Spirit is what makes them living rather than merely legal, and what He does with your side of the page from here is His to decide.

  1. Staircase I have stood at the bottom of, you have no authority to keep me down here. Hebrews 9:15 puts the promised inheritance in the hands of the called, and I was called before I ever printed my name in the boxes. In the name of Jesus I am going up, and I am reading it sitting down.
  2. Suspicion that I am tolerated here, you are not humility and I am finished calling you by that name. The word says I am a party to this covenant and not a guest in it, and the Holy Spirit did not hand me a document in order to catch me reading it. I am opening it today, at my own table, with my own name inside it.
  3. Lord, You countersigned this before I ever came to the stairs, and You did not write me in as somebody delivering something. Your word puts the called inside the inheritance and Your Spirit put me among the called, so I thank You that the half which holds this up was never mine to hold. My half is an answer, and I am answering it today with the page open in front of me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
